Corina | 2768 comments Hello, we had a lovely weekend at the beach, enjoying summer here and managed to do some reading as well. How is everyone?
I think I put it Home Before Dark by Riley Sager. I checked the colour and it was more than 50% green and in the synopsis I read that it takes place in the Vermont woods. So hope that fits :-)
The plan sounds good to me.

Hi Veronica,

Just curious why doesn't the book Verity fulfill the green 7 card?
My weekend was okay, not much going on so I was able to focus on finishing up the book I had been reading. So I will take a little break until Feb 1st and start my reading for UNO!

I like the plan of waiting until week 3 to see what is left that we need to get done. I'm excited to get started!

Too much dark that might or might not be green but black, and Tineye didn't help clarify, when it's too ambiguous it's a no for the mods, and they're very picky.

Vanessa Menezes (vanessa_menezes) | 441 comments Hey guys! Are all of u excited n ready?

What are u all planning on reading first?

message 56: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments Hey Vanessa, definitely excited. I have to wait a bit longer cause of the timezone so it will be evening for me in NZ.
I think I will start with The Island of Missing Trees cause I just saw a great review of it.
How about you? What is everyone planning to read?

message 57: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa Menezes (vanessa_menezes) | 441 comments Oh yeah even for its going to be mid afternoon!

I'm going to start with Find Me by Alafair Burke.

message 58: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments Oh, I'm interested to hear if you like that one

message 59: by JoJo_theDodo (last edited Jan 31, 2022 10:13AM) (new)

JoJo_theDodo | 320 comments Oh yes I'm excited! I will start the book Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout
Olive Kitteridge (Olive Kitteridge, #1) by Elizabeth Strout
as soon as it is Feb. 1st! I might change up the books I added to the team list a little. I started a new series recently and I'd really like to read the next book in the series soon.

message 60: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa Menezes (vanessa_menezes) | 441 comments You can change it anytime Jojo! Do let us know how you like this.

It's always exciting to discover new books.

Verónica | 417 comments Hello Everyone!

Challenge is around the corner.

UNO 2022 Challenge Countdown
https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown...

I usually start at the same time a print (relax daytime), e-book (before sleep) and audio (doing chores). I think I'll start with all non-fiction: My Promised Land (about Israel), Minds made for Stories (language and writing) and Mating in Captivity (sexuality and relationships). Two of these are for color cards, Blue 6 and Red 8.

Just a reminder that only consecutive completed hands count for points. We cannot leave (at the end of the month) a hand incomplete and jump to the next. It's not necessary to finish color cards first, but if you feel like reading them, it's ok.

Happy reading to all!

message 62: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments I finished all the books I was reading so that I can start fresh with the challenge.
My list will probably change as well, but will let you know. I usually do the same with one print, one e-book and one audio.
Forgot to mention The Island of Missing Trees will work for Blue 6 and a few other prompts. Will also probably start The Soulmate Equation for Yellow 1,6. They are both on the spreadsheet.
I don't read that much non fiction but those sound interesting, Verónica!

Another Blue 6 it's great, we have a WD4 card in the first hand, which is a duplicated color card.

message 64: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments Thats a good match then :-)

message 65: by Heli (new)

Heli | 121 comments I'm wrapping up January right now. I'll add some books to the spreadsheet . Books that I know I will definitely read in February.

message 66: by JoJo_theDodo (new)

JoJo_theDodo | 320 comments I typically do a print book and an audio book each day. I've tried an e-book before and I just couldn't seem to get into it in that format. I have a goal to read mostly print books that are on my physical shelves/stacks around my house and this UNO challenge is definitely going to help me with that. Also, one audiobook a month is the selection for my library book club that I attend with my husband so hopefully that selection can fit into the challenge as well. : )

message 67: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments I can relate to the physical books JoJo! Hopefully with UNO I can help me decrease the number of unread books on my shelves :-)

message 68: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments I've been patiently waiting to start the books for the challenge. Luckily Audible have The Invisible Life of Addie Larue as a free book for Feb so I'm rereading it via audio.

message 69: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa Menezes (vanessa_menezes) | 441 comments I have one book to finish from our Jan buddy read. After that I'll start.

message 70: by JoJo_theDodo (new)

JoJo_theDodo | 320 comments I have the Invisible Life of Addie Larue on my hold for Libby, so I will be listening to that at some point. I really need to get involved in Buddy Reads, I haven't done a Buddy Read yet.

message 71: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments I really loved the Invisible Life of Addie Larue when I read it. And if you have the audio, the narrator is really good.
Buddy reads are a great way to share the reading experience of a book :-)

JoJo_theDodo | 320 comments Wow! Heli you finished that book in one day! That's awesome!

So, you can use the first or last name of a character? for author you can use the first or last name too? Correct?
Also, should we all do a completion post whenever we complete a book?

message 74: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments Well done, Heli!

message 75: by JoJo_theDodo (new)

JoJo_theDodo | 320 comments I don't understand how 2 days into this challenge some of the teams already have over 100 points. I just can't believe they are being very honest...

message 76: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments To be honest, not sure where the other teams are at, I didn't really follow the other threads
Maybe they are reading shorter books...who knows...

message 77: by Corina (last edited Feb 02, 2022 07:06PM) (new)

message 78: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa Menezes (vanessa_menezes) | 441 comments Yes Heli! You can use first or last name.

And leaving a completion Post is optional but do update the excel sheet!

message 79: by Verónica (new)

Verónica | 417 comments Thank you for updating guys!

I'll update the official spreadsheet on the weekend. In the meantime I'm placing the books for the cards in our spreadsheet (February Cards sheet) so you can check how things are going.

message 80: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments Just a brief completion post this time around as I did update the spreadsheet.
A book I absolutely loved:
The Island of Missing Trees
Author: Elif Shafak
Pages: 368
Date: 3rd Feb
Cover: blue
Just a question on this as I wasn't sure it would apply: one of the actual characters in the book is a fig tree, would this go under F character?

Heli | 121 comments Vanessa wrote: "Yes Heli! You can use first or last name.

Great! I read a lot and the completion posts take a lot of time. Fortunately all the information is on the spread sheet.

I happen to look at points spreadsheet that UNO Pixie had recently posted to the UNO chat thread. I'm not following any of the other groups threads though..

message 83: by JoJo_theDodo (new)

JoJo_theDodo | 320 comments I just updated one of the books I completed to the spreadsheet. I expect I'll finish my print book tomorrow. I guess I'm just not a very fast reader, I'll focus on enjoying my reading time and helping the team however I can. I won't stress or focus on the points so much...

Definitely Jojo, it's all about having fun and enjoying your reading experience, that's the most important thing!
I'm just wanting to focus on reading from my shelves and decrease the number of unread books I have there. :)

message 85: by Bella (new)

Bella | 1177 comments same here! I'll try to read books that cover cards we haven't gotten yet but if you guys have any suggestions, I'm happy to fill in whichever cards we need!

message 86: by Verónica (last edited Feb 03, 2022 03:03PM) (new)

Verónica | 417 comments Yeah this challenge sometimes excites my competitiveness, but I also remember that it's a challenge not a competition. It really helps to make my reading more focused, and my TBR less overwhelming. Shout out to all the book hoarders in da house! And it's social, it's fun :).

I'll be highlighting in green on our spreadsheet the books I am placing in the hands as I go. It's more for control purposes. You don't need to highlight them yourselves.

If you want to do a completion post it's fine. It helps to give me the heads up that a book has been finished, since I receive a notification. But it doesn't need to have all info, maybe just the book. But I'll be checking the spreadsheet regularly to look for books with finished date on them.

message 87: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments Thanks, Verónica, sounds good! I will keep updating the spreadsheet and just do the brief completion post.
Not sure if you notice my question about the fig tree? Would it count for F character? It is an actual character in the book with dedicated chapters.

Oh yes let me check that one out. I think it does count for a 4, but let me confirm.

Corina | 2768 comments Thank you, Verónica!

message 90: by Verónica (new)

Verónica | 417 comments Corina wrote: "Thank you, Verónica!"

Yes, it counts as a 4(F) card : ).

message 91: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments Great, will add it in :)

message 92: by JoJo_theDodo (new)

JoJo_theDodo | 320 comments Hi All! Hope you are all well and enjoying your reading time! : )

I just finished Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout and updated it on the spreadsheet.

message 93: by JoJo_theDodo (new)

JoJo_theDodo | 320 comments I'm going to start The Kite Runner next. I noticed a few have read this one before so it could be used for one of our Reverse cards.

message 94: by JoJo_theDodo (new)

JoJo_theDodo | 320 comments Oh and even though it seems a lot of people liked the book, Olive Kitteridge I just didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped I would. I'm finding that I like stories with a good balance of likable characters and I didn't like most of the characters in this book. I have read another book by this author and I really enjoyed it. There is a second book in this series though and I think it would fit well into our UNO challenge, so I'm going to listen to that on audio next. Just to complete the series and get some points for the team!

Nice! I hope we'll finally be able to complete our first hand, hehe.

message 96: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments Well done, JoJo. Too bad you haven't enjoyed it as much as you hoped. Its on my TBR but not a priority at the moment. I really loved The Island of Missing Trees and enjoyed The Soulmate Equation. My current book is interesting so far.
I absolutely loved The Kite Runner, it is quite a sad book though. Hope you love it as well if you read it.

message 97: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments One of the books I finished, The Soulmate Equation, was read by Vanessa and Kira, so we can count one Reverse, right? :-)

Verónica | 417 comments Corina wrote: "One of the books I finished, The Soulmate Equation, was read by Vanessa and Kira, so we can count one Reverse, right? :-)"

I had selected that one as a 6 yellow, but I saw two more books for that color card, so yes, now we have our first reverse ;-).

message 99: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2768 comments Got it, I thought we could select it for both haha :-)

message 100: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa Menezes (vanessa_menezes) | 441 comments I loved the Kite Runner too! in fact I loved all of his books.
