SOLVED. YA fiction about a prom with a girl who gave a child up for adoption. [s]

I read a book when I was in middle or high school (around 1998-2003) - I checked it out from the school library and feel like it was an older book, maybe even a few decades old at the time I read it. The main thing I remember is these kids were going to prom, and one of the girls was really nervous and sad because she had gone away for a while to have a baby and give the baby up for adoption. I think she was also wearing a special shawl her grandmother(?) gave her to wear for the prom. There were other characters, but I don't remember them or anything else about the plot. Please let me know if anyone else remembers this book!
