This is set in an Elizabethan England with magic (and some steampunk technology I think).

The hero is an actor and a spy, like an Elizabethan James Bond. He has his own version of Q. He's probably called Captain and it might be something like Tremblayne so something similar. He's working to discover the enemies of the state. He gets attacked in a public bathing pool but manages to escape. Some of the ministers are baddies. It's very much tongue in cheek.

I read the book about ten years ago - 2010 - 2017. it's a British male SF/fantasy author. It was published as a paperback with an Elizabethan style font on the cover.
