Query abandoned by poster > ABANDONED. History, Trains and Transportation. Almost suitable for children. Had "Roll" in the title, and part of the author's name was "Clifford". Read in late 1970s.

Bill I read this in the late 70s. It was a long book of vignettes, trivia, and statistics about trains and transportation. The material was almost suitable for children, with the exception that it got a bit gruesome at times in the descriptions of train accidents or disfiguring injuries of employees.

I believe it had the word "Roll" in the title, and that part of the author's name was "Clifford."

Daisy (daisyporter) | 1200 comments Bill, have you ruled out the 19 books that come up when you search for "clifford roll" on Goodreads?

Bill Yup. I tried that. But thanks for the advice.

Part of a series?
Any illustrations in the book?

Bill In the USA. It was mostly about US transportation.

I'm sorry, I don't recall if there were any illustrations.

Clifford Parker
The story of speed: From the invention of the wheel to modern-day space travel

An image of the cover (dust jacket) can be seen here: https://www.picclickimg.com/d/l400/pi...
(If you don't want to click, you can do a Google Image search, which is how I found it). Short description: a black or navy background with a space capsule, a Concorde, a fighter jet, an express train, a speed boat, and a horse and jockey, all with coloured streaks of white + a bold colour streaming behind them. All are travelling left to right.

I know "roll" isn't in the title. I couldn't find anything with that combination. I'm hoping it might be a chapter heading you remember that isn't shown? :)

(I also found another - "History Along Roads and Waterways", by Clifford John Lines, but it's based upon transport in Great Britain):
History Along Roads and Waterways

The same British author wrote "People on the Move" as well:

Bill Thanks for the bump, Capn. I've been meaning to get back to this.

You've done a very good job with the scant information I've given you, but my memories of this book are too unclear to say if you've found it. The fault is all mine.

Capn | 3506 comments No no, not to worry at all! It happens in this forum, as you can well imagine! :)

Thanks for getting back to us all the same. Could be that your book is still out there, and you'll know it when you see it!
