Actually, we did find water on Mars in rocks and stuff.

Maybe people will go and live there in future. But at least for the present, there's no proof that suggests that there is life on the red planet. But, there might be life below the ground, that we haven't yet found.

For now they are mostly trying to find microbial life on Mars. If they are able to find it, and are sure about the discovery, we could perhaps think about the existence of complicated life too.
What will it prove? well, there are some theories that life first started off on the red planet, so we might be able to prove or disprove that theory. That's one of the reasons that I can think of.

Honestly, we have so much to learn about the red planet and about the cosmos in general. I don't think we'll ever learn about everything that is to be known about the universe.

and dude whatever you said about us not knowing everything there is to know about our universe is really true. sometimes, the way the universe works is beyond our imagination. because no matter how many breakthroughs we make about the universe, there's still a lot we haven't discovered, and a lot to be answered.. but it's great that we're progressing and trying our best to know more! the universe slowly unfolds itself to us which is really beautiful but at the same time sparks a lot of curiosity and answers
