Before we had GUI (graphical user interface) based computer/phones, we had CLI (command line interface) operating systems.
The phones and computers we use these days all have GUI based operating systems.
So basically, GUI based OS (operating systems), are the ones that have icons, thumbnails and all that visual stuff. You either tap/point/or press a key on the keyboard to activate/select an item.
Examples for GUI based OS are: Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac, some Linux based OS (like Ubuntu, Fedora), Google Android, Apple IOS, and so many more.
In CLI (command line interface) OS, you had to type each and every command through your keyboard. Like you didn't have icons and stuff. If you had to login to your computer, you had to type in your username and password in a black blank window.
If you had to copy a file from one folder to another, you couldn't just select, copy, and then paste it in another location, nor could you drag and drop the file. And you couldn't even use keyboard commands.
You had to type in first the file name, the location where the file is stored, then the location where the file should be copied. tedious right?
The first ever computer that had a GUI based OS is Alto personal computer. It was developed by Xerox in 1973.

GUI OS have made our lives so easy.
