Jemisin writing is so intriguing. And my favorite part of her books, is that she doesn't follow the normal fantasy themes.
The Fifth Season and this book take a bit of time to understand, because of the complex world building, you're hooked to the story, you just can't let it go.
And the diversity part is honestly the best thing.

why why why 😭
her book The City We Became imagines a world where cities have souls! And NY comes alive!
I neeeeeed to readddd that sooon

IKK
What's also intriguing is that she combines sci-fi and fantasy in her Broken Earth trilogy.
I mean can you imagine that? 2 of my favorite genres coming together?

The sun, as was its wont, was moving quickly. Already half of its bulk was
above the horizon line. Soon it would no longer be dawn, but day.

Dekarta nodded, unruffled by Scimina’s sudden spluttering. “Take the Stone,
then,” he commanded me. “Make your choice real.”
My choice. I lifted a shaking hand to take the Stone, and wondered if death
would hurt. My choice.
“Do it,” whispered Relad. He was leaning forward, his whole body taut. “Do
it, do it, do it… ”
“No!” Scimina again, a scream. I saw her lunge at me from the corner of my
eye.
“I’m sorry,” Viraine whispered behind me, and suddenly everything stopped.
I blinked, not sure what had happened. Something made me look down.
There, poked through the bodice of my ugly dress, was something new: the
tip of a knife blade. It had emerged from my body on the right side of my
sternum, just beside the swell of my breast. The cloth around it was changing,
turning a strange wet black.
Blood, I realized. The Stone’s light stole the color even from that.
Lead weighed my arm. What had I been doing? I could not remember. I was
very tired. I needed to lie down.
So I did.
And I died.
😲

Amid all this, Dekarta moves toward my body. He stops and struggles to his
knees; in the end he slips in my blood and half-falls on me, grimacing in pain.
Then his expression hardens. He looks up into the sky, where his god fights,
then down. At the Stone. It is the source of the Arameri clan’s power; it is
also the physical representation of their duty. Perhaps he hopes that by doing
that duty, he will remind Itempas of the value of life. Perhaps he retains some
smidgeon of faith. Perhaps it is simply that forty years ago, Dekarta killed his
wife to prove his commitment. To do otherwise now would mock her death.
He reaches for the Stone.
It is gone.
But it was there, lying in my blood, a moment before. Dekarta frowns, looks
around. His eyes are attracted by movement. The hole in my chest, which he
can see through the torn cloth of my bodice: the raw lips of the wound are
drawing together, pressing themselves closed. As the line of the wound
shrinks, Dekarta catches a glimmer of thin gray light. Within me.
Then I am drawn forward, down—
Yes. Enough of this disembodied soul business. Time to be alive again.
***
I opened my eyes and sat up.
Dekarta, behind me, made a sound somewhere between choking and a gasp.
No one else noticed as I got to my feet, so I turned to face him.
“Wh—what in every god’s name—” His mouth worked. He stared.
“Not every god,” I said. And because I was still me after all, I leaned down to
smile in his face. “Just me.”
Then I closed my eyes and touched my chest. Nothing beat beneath my
fingers; my heart had been destroyed. Yet something was there, giving life to
my flesh. I could feel it. The Stone. A thing of life, born of death, filled with
incalculable potential. A seed.
“Grow,” I whispered.
Holy shit
Is that stone just like the Mind Stone that Vision had in the MCU?

something has taken hold of her ponytail and yanked on it to direct her
attention where it is needed. There: the backyard. Not the one attached to her
own building, which is paved over and contains only weeds and the rustedout barrel of their downstairs neighbor’s former barbecue pit. The one next
door. Mrs. Yu lives in that garden apartment, and she’s decided that a
backyard needs a pool, probably because she used to live in Texas where that
was a thing people did. It’s just a little above-ground thing, dingy and
cracked after only two New York winters. At barely more than eight feet
wide, it takes up nearly the entirety of the yard. Still, it’s a hot June day, so
two of Mrs. Yu’s grandsons are hard at play in the water, giggling and
squealing loudly enough to almost—almost—drown out the screams from
Williamsburg.
And do they not notice the way the water suddenly changes color, as the
bright blue plastic bottom of the pool transforms into something else?
Something grayish white. Something altogether stranger than plastic.
Something ... moving, with a slow organic undulation that Padmini can see
even through the rippling water.
Thank goodness, it's not a generic Indian name
