SOLVED. Read in 5th grade for school - some kind of Contest probably a rat race situation, possibly a who done it with reward at the end. I think it's a well known book. Read 1994-1995. [s]

I honestly cannot remember much at all about it, other than it's a contest to win possibly a prize, I think some people die, the person at the end giving the prize money may be a twist? Some rich person.. i think people were calling him 'Mr'. something. It's at middle school reading level, probably a book many schools encouraged kids to read. read in 1994-1995.

I'm so sorry this is not much to go on. I can't remember much, no idea what the cover looked like.
