I read this book in middle school in 2012-13. It was a series of short horror stories, one book had maybe 300 pages and 2 stories. One of the books cover was a black cover with a dark, illuminated, smokey, purple, flower. One of the short stories I remember had a girl (from the UK) babysitting for a wealthy family. While she picked up the young boy from school, she almost hit a guy (love interest/ also famous hockey player that the kid was a fan of) because she was driving on the wrong side of the road. The guy let her off but asked her to help him pick jewelry for his mom. One piece of dialogue of his that is seered in my brain is, "Your eyes are green... green like soda bottle caps." The kid ends of being possessed by a spirit that is also responsible for killing another young child on the estate years ago. I think the private teacher had something to do with it.
Another short story in this series had a young girl whose mother dies from drowning in the lake that her sister had owned. Her sisters child found the dead mother in the lake and was never the same afterwards. The child of the dead mother comes back to the town to stay with the aunt and her 2 daughters. One is cold and quiet (the one who found the body) and the other is the perfect friend to the main character. As the girl lives in the house she finds that many of her necklaces and things are tied in knots. The quiet cousin says its ghosts and bad luck. The aunt is super supportive and loving to the main character (ends up being her real mom). The super nice friendly cousin was actually responsible for the mothers death 10 years before and had been trying to kill the main character the whole time.
I'm not sure if these next details are from the same short story up above or a different one in the series, but I just associate them with the whole series.
- Elderly grandma who is beautiful and main character meets her late in life. The grandmothers sister died young from using a potion that all young girls used to make their cheeks blush and eyes brighten. It had something to do with roses but is definitely something that is considered a poison. The main character is the spitting image of the sister.
All books in the series had a similar cover of the dark background with a singular object being illuminated or smokey. I believe the short stories were collaborative and had many authors so I really can't think of any one specific nor did the title of the book connect really to either story. It was all pretty vague but I want to finally reread and collect and finish the whole series. Please Help!
