I may have read this book around 1972. There is a young girl who looks into a mirror while saying, "When I grow up, what will I be? I'll close my eyes and count to three. One, two, three. Oh, look! It's me!" (Or something to that effect.) She sees herself in an oval cheval mirror as a young woman at different professions. In one she's a stewardess on an airplane. The pilot loses his nerve and the plane goes into a dive. He's in his seat covering his eyes with his hands. She reaches over him to take the controls and right the airplane. In another, she's a cowgirl at a rodeo. I can't remember the rest. Maybe a ballerina? Each time she repeats the same rhyme while closing her eyes, then opens them after the rhyme to see herself at a profession in the mirror. It was a hardback, thin book.

Maureen, is this a children's picture book (about 32-48 pages) or chapter book?
Are the illustrations: simple or detailed, realistic or cartoon-like, painted watercolors or bold graphics, color or black-and-white? Do they remind you of a similar illustrator or children's author?

I found this other search here:http://www.loganberrybooks.com/stump-... (L323)
Original post: My mom read this book as a child and I really want to find it for her. It is about a little girl who is looking in a mirror and imagining and seeing in the mirror all of the things that she can be when she grows up. My mom was born in 1964, so that gives you a time frame to work with.
Answer: Jean Bethell, Ruth Wood (illus), When I Grow Up (Easy Reader), 1964. Cover is yellow and shows a red-haired little girl from the back, wearing a red and green plaid jumper, white blouse, black tights, and red shoes. The girl is facing a large oval mirror in which she sees reflections of her older self as a ballerina, a nurse, a stewardess, and a cowgirl.
Hopefully When I Grow Up is your book too!
