Kathryn | 259 comments For Week 4 I decided to do the Beatles prompt since I’m a big Beatles fan. I originally thought the prompt was a book based on a Beatles song, but realized it’s based on someone on the cover of the Sergeant Peppers album cover. The Beatles are on the cover so doing the prompt based on one of their songs is not too much of a stretch although it seriously limited my options. I ended up reading Norwegian Wood. I definitely have mixed feelings about it.

I found The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society to be a bit of a let down. I’m not a big fan of Mary Sue characters and there were two of them.

I think there was a book about books prompt a few years ago, but I would love to do that one next year.

I ended up going a little out of order (I read week 5 before week 4) because I was waiting for a library hold to come through, but I’m going to plan better moving forward.

How are y'all doing going into February?! What do y'all have planned for next?

I'm using Raybearer (prompt 6 - light on cover), The Bone Season (prompt 7 - psych), Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood (prompt 8 - Asia), and Half of a Yellow Sun (prompt 9 - Africa)

message 53: by Nancy (last edited Jan 30, 2022 07:53AM) (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1832 comments I have 3 options for prompts 6 and 7, and multiple for the continents!

Right now I'm leaning toward When No One is Watching by Alyssa Cole (6), Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn (7), The Girl with the Louding Voice by Abi Dare (8 - Africa), and How the Penguins Saved Veronica by Hazel Prior (8 - Antarctica.

message 54: by LeahS (new)

LeahS | 1358 comments One ahead. I've read Artemisia by Letizia Treves for prompt 6.

Currently reading The Idiot Brain: A Neuroscientist Explains What Your Head is Really Up To, and have Transcendent Kingdom (North America) and Our Sister Killjoy (Europe) on their way to the library.

Kat | 14 comments I discovered this group mid-January and realized the books I had already read this month worked for the first few tasks so jumped in. So far I am reading pretty much in order but am slightly ahead (8 books read so far). I plan to continue pretty much in order. I do lots of challenges so it helps to narrow down my choices and not get overwhelmed.

message 56: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1488 comments I’m still reading in order & I like it. I used Come Rain or Come Shine (Mitford Years, #13) by Jan Koran for #6. It has a tent with light coming out of it. For #7 I used Group: How One Therapist and a circle of Strangers Saved My Life by Christie Tate. It fits the prompt perfectly & the book was good but 🚩 alert. For the first continent I used Names For The Sea: Strangers in Iceland by Sarah Moss. It’s set in Iceland (Northern Europe). Some of my favorite settings are the Arctic, Antarctica, and the Himalayan’s ( Asia) so that’s what I’ll read. I will be doing side reads maybe for the whole month of February. It’s Black History month in the U.S. & I have a few books picked out that don’t fit with reading the ATY challenge in order. I plan to be back.

message 57: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11183 comments Mod
Sherri, I ended up this month with 5 for ATY and 9 side reads lol. I anticipate February will be similar, and for the same reason... I'm using The Bone Season for prompt 7 and Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood for prompt 9, both of which aren't by Black authors, so I'll be supplementing with side reads for the month.

Jackie | 2450 comments Mod
I'm actually doing ok staying on track! I've just finished prompt 6, so I'm heading into February on schedule. The psych/neuro/mind prompt is calling audiobook to me so I'm going to see what I can borrow digitally from the library. Work has been crazy so it'll be nice to having something to listen to during the day.

message 59: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1832 comments I plan to read Black authors for the Pop Sugar prompts in Feb so I'm ok with not using them for ATY. I did move around my continent books though so Africa is first.

message 60: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 259 comments I’m reading The Three-Body Problem for the light on the cover (just started it today), Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Behavior for the psychology/mind prompt (it’s been on my physical shelf for years so it’ll be good to get to that one, then When Heaven and Earth Changed Places: A Vietnamese Woman's Journey from War to Peace (Asia), and My Sister, the Serial Killer (Africa). I’m mostly on track and trying to stick to the order.

message 61: by Anna (new)

Anna (annaik) | 401 comments I am slightly behind but not too much so I think I am fine with time to complete anyway. My upcoming books are Skating to Antarctica (prompt #4, using A book with a theme of exploration), Inställd resa till Sabarmati (prompt #5) and The Light Between Oceans (prompt #6).

message 62: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

message 63: by Meg (new)

Meg (megscl) | 132 comments I am right on track so far - 4.5 books in and 4.5 weeks in.
For prompt 4 I chose a book associated with Lunar New Year and the Year of the Tiger, and it worked out perfectly because New Year actually fell in that week!

message 64: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1488 comments I'm back to reading for this challenge after reading for Black History Month & the ATY Read-A-Thon. I read the following for prompts # 8,9,& 10.
8. Names For The Sea: Strangers in Iceland by Sarah Moss. Northern Europe.
9. The Impossible First: From Fire to Ice - Crossing Antarctica Alone by Colin O'Brady. Antarctica.
10. On Call In the Arctic by Dr. Thomas J. Sims. Extreme NW North America.
My current read is The Women of Chateau Lafayette by Stephanie Dray for #11 historical fiction. Also Women's History Month.

message 65: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1832 comments The read-a-thon got me caught up, but I'm slightly behind again. I'm reading How the Penguins Saved Veronica for 3 continents (Antarctica), I'm halfway through the audio and am hoping to finish it up this weekend. Then I'm reading Eva Luna for my last 3 continents (S. America).

Other books planned for March:

Historical fiction - When We Left Cuba
Book related to glass - either The Lamplighters or The Light Between Oceans
Woman in STEM - either Migrations or Lessons in Chemistry

As always which book I go with depends on library availability and NetGalley reviews.

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11183 comments Mod
I just finished my third continent book! It's been a real struggle to see the "You're on track!" instead of being way ahead like I normally am at this point in the year lol.

This month, my ATY books are:
The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina by Zoraida Córdova (continent #3: South America)
Matrix by Lauren Groff (historical fiction)
The Neighbor's Secret by L. Alison Heller (related to glass - cover shows broken glass on it)
The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey (women in STEM)

Nancy, I think I'm going to read Migrations for the Earth Day prompt! Or I might use it for fauna... it will get read this year though lol

message 67: by Sue (new)

Sue S | 554 comments I am continuing to read in the correct week, with lots of others in between, especially during the Readathon! This week is my 3rd continent: A Room Made of Leaves (Australasia), and my other AtY picks for March are:
The Red Tent by Anita Diamant (historical fiction)
The Glass Canoe by David Ireland (related to glass)
Flight Behaviour by Barbara Kingsolver (woman in STEM) - I hope this one fits the prompt!

message 68: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11183 comments Mod
Oh Sue, The Red Tent is so good!!

I'm reading Once There Were Wolves for Earth Day! I'm definitely leaning toward Migrations for Woman in STEM though.

Sue I'm not sure Flight Behavior fits Woman in STEM, it's been a while since I read it though.

message 70: by Dubhease (last edited Mar 06, 2022 10:19AM) (new)

Dubhease | 1150 comments I am managing about 3 of the monthly prompts per month. (Mostly read in order)

I'm reading:
The Birth and Death of the Miracle Man and Other Stories (Continent - Oceana (Samoa))
The Woman in the Window (related to glass)
The Girl Who Played with Fire (a woman in STEM)

Plus, I'm going to read something from a January prompt I missed.

message 71: by Dubhease (new)

Dubhease | 1150 comments Emily wrote: "Oh Sue, The Red Tent is so good!!"

I've head good things. I read the Boston Girl, by the same author.

Thanks Nancy - I was unsure about Flight Behaviour but picked it because it's on the Listopia, though I have been led astray by Listopias before. Instead I will read another Kingsolver Prodigal Summer which apparently has a wildlife biologist as a protagonist.

message 73: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 259 comments I really struggled to find something to fill the glass prompt but finally settled on The Sound of Glass, which I just finished this weekend. It started off strong, but unfortunately the rest of the book didn’t live up to the high expectations I had after reading the first chapter.

I’m starting on The Rose Code for the woman in STEM prompt and am really excited about it. I’m expecting this one to take a little longer than the previous ones I’ve read because it’s the longest book I have planned for the year.

I’m also planning to read Migrations for the Earth Day prompt!

message 74: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11183 comments Mod
Ahhhh The Rose Code was one of my favorites last year, and Kate Quinn has another novel coming out at the end of the month that is (coincidentally) set in the Ukraine. I already preordered it!

message 75: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1832 comments Sue, Flight Behavior definitely works for Earth Day if you still want to read it! Or fauna too.

message 76: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1488 comments I read The Women of Chateau Lafayette for #11 historical fiction. I love this prompt because historical fiction is about all I read so this fit into my plans perfectly. 5 stars.

message 77: by Sherri (last edited Mar 31, 2022 07:22AM) (new)

Sherri Harris | 1488 comments Since it's the last day of March I thought I'd check in.
10. 3 books set on three different continents. On Call in the Arctic: A Doctor's Pursuit of Life, Love, and Miracles in the Alaskan Frontier. Extreme NW North America.
11. A book from the historical fiction genre. The Women of Chateau Lafayette
12. A book related to glass. The Lost Apothecary
13. A book about a woman in STEM. The Tenth Muse
April
14. A book with fewer than 5,000 ratings on Goodreads. Peach Blossom Spring
15. A book without a person on the cover. A History of Wild Places
16. A book related to Earth Day. Grandma Gatewood's Walk: The Inspiring Story of the Woman Who Saved the Appalachian Trail
17. A book from NPR's book concierge. Bewilderment

Good idea, Sherri!

10. 3 books set on three different continents - Book/Continent 3
The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina by Zoraida Córdova (South America)

11. A book from the historical fiction genre
The Last Bookshop in London: A Novel of World War II by Madeline Martin (WWII)

12. A book related to glass
The Neighbor's Secret by L. Alison Heller
The Neighbor's Secret by L. Alison Heller

13. A book about a woman in STEM
The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey (biologist)

14. A book with fewer than 5000 ratings on Goodreads
The Unsinkable Greta James by Jennifer E. Smith (3149 ratings at time of reading)

I had said I would limit myself to reading them only in the month they are listed, but things have come up and I know the end of the year will be busy, so I'm going to allow myself to get ahead a bit.

message 79: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1832 comments I'm right on track, in the middle of Migrations for week 13 Woman in STEM.

Here's what I have planned for April:

14. A book with fewer than 5000 ratings on Goodreads - The Summer House
15. A book without a person on the cover - The Wedding Game
16. A book related to Earth Day - Once There Were Wolves
17. A book from NPR's Book Concierge - A Burning

message 80: by Nancy (last edited Apr 04, 2022 10:32AM) (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1832 comments So after completing Migrations, I decided it really doesn't work for Woman in STEM. So I moved it to man-made disaster for the Pop Sugar challenge - climate change is most definitely man-made, IMO. And instead I'm now reading Lessons in Chemistry, which I have from NetGalley. It's putting me behind since we're now on week 14 but I will get caught up.

I will also likely swap out my week 14 book, I have another NetGalley book I need to read (The Wedding Crasher). I wasn't going to use a review book for this prompt because it feels like cheating to read an un-released book, but since it releases tomorrow then that's not an issue anymore.

I just realized I'll be reading two books with Wedding in the title in a row!

message 81: by Sue (new)

Sue S | 554 comments I am also on track but had several changes to my planned list for this month. My books for April are:
13. A book about a woman in STEM - Prodigal Summer - loved this one
14. A book with fewer than 5,000 ratings on Goodreads - Devotion (started reading The Chinese Bandit but it was so awful I had to give up)
15. A book without a person on the cover - The Memory Room
16. A book related to Earth Day - The Hungry Tide
17. A book from NPR's book concierge - Girl, Woman, Other

message 82: by Aimee (new)

Aimee (pebbles320) I've managed to stay on track, and have just finished #15 - a book without a person on the cover (Amongst Our Weapons by Ben Aaronovitch). However I'm going to wait before starting #16 because I want to read it on Earth Day itself, which is the 22nd, so I'm planning a few side-reads to catch up on series I've started for other prompts.

For #17 (NPR's book concierge), I'm considering The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue because I already have it on Audible but just haven't got round to it yet,

message 83: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 96 comments I am attempting to read mostly in order with exceptions for library holds/pub dates. I am way behind, but working on getting caught up. Here's what I have read so far:

1. The Secret Wife (Tatiana)

2. Moonflower Murders (Read another book by same author in 2021)

3. The Final Girl Support Group (24 letters)

4. Miss Benson's Beetle (fave prompt - book featuring an unlikely friendship)

5. Little Secrets (Author: Jennifer Hillier)

6. Book with light source - planning Blood Sugar but it was just released in April and I'm waiting on my library hold

7. Never Saw Me Coming (psychopathy)

8. The Book of Two Ways (Book 1 - Africa)

9. The Christie Affair (Book 2 - Europe)

10. Euphoria (Currently reading Book 3 - Oceania)

*Have also read some out of order due to publishing dates/library holds coming in: House of Sky and Breath (next book in a series), All Her Little Secrets (related to glass - glass ceiling, eyeglasses on cover) and American Royals (nationality in title)

message 84: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1832 comments How is almost May already?! Not only did I get caught up, I'm a little ahead so read something else before starting week 18, which I started last night.

My goal is to stay as much on track as possible and read the books during the designated week, and not jump ahead more than a few days. Here's what I have on tap for May:

18. A book by an Asian or Pacific Islander author - A Single Swallow
19. A book that involves alternate reality, alternate worlds, or alternate history - The Ten Thousand Doors of January OR The Kaiju Preservation Society
20. A fiction or nonfiction book that is set during 1900 -1950 - For Whom the Bell Tolls OR The Murder of Roger Ackroyd
21. A book with one of the Monopoly tokens on the cover - Dear Miss Kopp
22. A book with a Jewish character or author - The Boston Girl

message 85: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1488 comments I had read through April by the end of March. My goal was to stay ahead & complete May. I only completed prompts # 18 & 19. I was waiting for books to arrive & reading for other challenges.
18. A book by an Asian or Pacific Islander author. Dial A for Aunties (Aunties #1) by Jesse Q. Sutanto
19. A book that involves alternate reality, alternate worlds, or alternate history. A Master of Djinn (Dead Djinn Universe #1) by P. Djeli Clark

message 86: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1488 comments I have completed June & the first prompt of July. I'm back to waiting on books to arrive from the library.
20. A Fiction or non fiction book that is set during 1900-1951. The Personal Librarian. I enjoyed the book. I didn't know anything about Bella da Costa Green.
21. A book with one of the Monopoly tokens on the cover. Come Fly the World: The Jet-Age Story of the Women of Pan Am. A nostalgic read for me.
22. A book with a Jewish character or author. An Unorthodox Match. I enjoy the heritage month reads.
23. A book that features a loving LGBTQIA+ relationship. Any Way the Wind Blows. I think this series is over. I really liked it.
24. A book related to inclement weather. Migrations
25. A book with less than 220 pages or more than 440 pages. Memorial Drive: A Daughter's Memoir
26./ 27.2 books with the same word in the title - book 1. What If It's Us. The Truth According to Us. I didn't like The Truth According to
Us
. I got mad at Fleix, Jottie & Willa.

message 87: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 259 comments I had a few rough weeks in May when I was very sick but now I’m better so hopefully I can get caught up!

In the last week I finished Project Hail Mary for prompt 19: A book that involves alternate reality, alternate worlds, or alternate history and The Grapes of Wrath for 20: A fiction or nonfiction book that is set during 1900 -1951.

Both were really good! I had been meaning to read the Grapes of Wrath since junior year of high school—it was the only book I’ve ever been required to read for school that I never read (not because I didn’t want to, but because I lost my physical copy of the book).

Next up for the month of June are the following:

21. A book with one of the Monopoly tokens on the cover: The Simple Wild
22. A book with a Jewish character or author The Golem and the Jinni
23. A book that features loving LGBTQIA+ relationship Under the Whispering Door
24. A book related to inclement weather The Four Winds
25. A book less than 220 pages OR more than 440 pages The Final Empire

I'm still behind but the readathon really helped me get a leg up. I've got The Feather Thief on audio for Earth Day, which is turning into a surprisingly good fit. I thought it might be a tenuous link but there's a lot in here on the history of museum collections and how these birds were overhunted. Anyway, after that I've got A Psalm for the Wild-Built for NPR's book concierge ready and waiting.

message 89: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1832 comments How goes it weekly readers? I was caught up, and now I'm not again. I'm not super behind though, and I started my week 26 book even though I'm not done with week 25 yet (and week 27 starts Saturday!). I figure as long as I finish week 25 first I'll still be in order (and yes I know it matters to no one but me lol).

Here's what I have on tap:

25. A book less than 220 pages OR more than 440 pages - The House by the River by Lena Manta - I went for the longer one here which is why I'm behind. I should finish it in the next day or two though.
26. 2 books with the same word in the title - Magic Lessons by Alice Hoffman (started this on audio today)
27. 2 books with the same word in the title - The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman
28. A book that won an award from Powell's list of book awards - Network Effect by Martha Wells
29. A book set on or near a body of water - Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie
30. A book related to mythology - The Sandman by Neil Gaiman (Audible version)

I will be on a road trip the week of week 29 with my husband and 15-year-old son, so Death on the Nile might be fun for us all to listen to.

message 90: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy | 1137 comments I’m a week behind, just got started on The Fall of Babel which I meant to pair with Babel, or The Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution but it isn’t out yet, and the first one is over 600 pages! So July will require some catch up.

I'm a couple of books ahead, but I'm now trying to finish by the beginning of November with the baby on the way, so I'm still a bit behind of where I need to be to meet that goal.

Here's what I have planned for July:

28. The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro (Powell's award winner)
29. Float Plan by Trish Dollar (set near water)
30. A History of Wild Places by Shea Ernshaw (mythology)
31. The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton (published 10+ years ago)
32. The Book of Cold Cases by Simone St. James (female private investigator)

That will put me halfway through August's prompts. I wouldn't mind reading the next two prompts as well, but I don't want to push myself too much!

That being said, I will be cheating just a bit for the next two prompts. I plan on using A Deadly Education and The Last Graduate for the series and academia prompt. I wasn't planning on using a first-in-the-series book for the series prompt, but I'm justifying it by reading the second in the series for the academia prompt.

message 92: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1488 comments Whoop Whoop I have made it 6 months. I think I can do this for the next six months. I finished July & have read 3 prompts into August. I'm currently reading The Secret History for # 34 A book with an academic setting or with a teacher that plays an important role. I'm enjoying the book.
July:
27. 2 Books with the same word in the title. What If It's Us
28. A book from the Powell's list of book awards. The Great
Believers
. I enjoyed this book.
29. Set near a body of water. Malibu Rising. I could have used this book for a few different prompts but it worked great here. I read it in a day. I owned the book so added points for me.
30. A book related to mythology. Kaikeyi. I owned this book too. I got it to use for this prompt knowing nothing about it. It was very good.
August:
31. A book published at least 10 years ago. Home
32. A female detective... In This Grave Hour. I waited all year to read the next book in this series.
33. The next book in a series. [book:The Hollywood Spy|55655064
I have caught up on this series for now. I'm sad.

I'm having a harder time this summer balancing my audiobooks and print books and finishing them in order. It looks like I'll finish Float Plan for Prompt 29 before The Remains of the Day for Prompt 28. I'm trying to not be too much of a stickler about something as small as that but it bugs me a bit lol.

Sherri Harris | 1488 comments I finished August then came to a screeching halt on prompt # 39 for September. I got notification this morning that after two weeks the book I put on hold for prompt #39 is in. I can get moving again on the challenge until I hit another brick wall.
August
# 34 A book with an academic setting or with a teacher that plays an important role. The Secret History by Donna Tartt. 5 stars. There are a lot of excellent choices for this prompt but I have wanted to read this book for years.
# 35 2 books related to flora and fauna. Finding the Mother Tree by Suzanne Simard. 5 stars.
September
#36 2 books related to flora and fauna. World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments by Aimee Nezhukumatathil. 5 stars.
# 37 A book that uses all five vowels in the title … The House at the Edge of Night by Catherine Banner. 4 stars
#38 A book by a Latin American author. Olga Dies Dreaming by Xochitl Gonzalez. 5 stars. One of my favorite books of 2022.

I'm listening to Christine for published more than 10 years ago and it's close to 20 hours (on the short side for Mr. King!) so I'm doing Kindle too.

Here's my plan for August:

31. A book published at least 10 years ago - Christine
32. A book where the main character is a female detective or police officer - Ceremony in Death
33. The next book in a series - The Grave's a Fine and Private Place
34. A book with an academic setting or with a teacher that plays an important role - The Maidens
35. 2 books related to flora and fauna - West with Giraffes

In July I read:
28. Powell's Book Awards - The Remains of the Day
29. Set on water - Float Plan
30. Mythology - A History of Wild Places
31. Published 10+ years ago - The Age of Innocence
32. Female detective - The Book of Cold Cases

36. Fauna - Unlikely Animals
37. All 5 vowels - I'll Give You the Sun (by Jandy Nelson)

Sue S | 554 comments I had a few wobbles in June and July due to a 3 week camping holiday in June and 2 weeks interstate visiting family in July, both of which severely impacted my reading time, but I have since caught up and am expecting smooth sailing until my son and his fiance arrive from Canada in November.

In July I read:
26. 2 books with the same word in the title - Book 1 This Must Be the Place
27. 2 books with the same word in the title - Book 2 1022 Evergreen Place
