SOLVED. YA novel about a young girl working on a boat and is shipwrecked

I remember reading this book as a kid in the early 2000s and I believe it takes place in the 19th century. A girl dresses as a boy and goes to work on a ship. I think there's something about her being orphaned/living with extended family and being unhappy. She gets into the swing of things on the boat, but is shipwrecked and ends up alone on an island. At one point she gets sick (I believe with TB but it's called consumption in the book) and is nursed back to health by a gorilla.
