slauderdale | 182 comments I'm looking for fiction, and possibly narrative nonfiction, about amblyopia or "lazy eye." All ages please, but it would be nice to find chapter books and older. Could be *about* having amblyopia; could be incidental, in that the main character happens to have it. But yes, preferably the main character; I'm not looking for Alastor Moody in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, that's getting too far afield.

Suggestions and strategies welcome. So far I have found some picture books and a poetry chapbook, which I list here in case they are interesting to others:

Jacob's eye patch (Beth Kobliner and Jacob Shaw) - picture book
The Patch (Justina Chen Headley) - picture book
My Travelin' Eye (Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw) - picture book
Fixing My Gaze: A Scientist's Journey into Seeing in Three Dimensions (Susan R. Barry) - nonfiction
Amblyopia (Ananda Lima) - nonfiction, poetry

SamSpayedPI | 2308 comments "Security Is an Eye Patch" (https://mediacommons.unl.edu/luna/ser...-) is a pamphlet published by the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. It's a collection of Peanuts comic strips in which Sally Brown deals with amblyopia.

slauderdale, I see some of those books on Worldcat.org. You might find a few more. For example:

Search using WorldCat.org:
https://www.worldcat.org/advancedsear...
Keyword: amblyopia | Fiction | Book | English
Keyword: amblyopia biography | Non-Fiction | Book | English
(Note: Sometimes the website glitches and defaults to a non-English language. Try right-clicking a blank area on the webpage and selecting Translate to English (or similar) from the browser's menu.)

slauderdale | 182 comments Thank you for these suggestions. The Peanuts pamphlet sent me looking, and the larger compendium "The Complete Peanuts: 1965 to 1966" may have more strips about Sally and her patch and may serve as a good longer work that happens to involve amblyopia as a subplot. I'm also starting to Google the phrase
"I have amblyopia"
in GoogleBooks to see what else I come up with.

slauderdale | 182 comments I just found The Treasure Troop Series by Dori Hillestad Butler. The main character, Marly, is not quite nine in the first book but is going into the fourth grade and she has amblyopia (she is a blond girl with a pink flower patch on all the covers.) It looks like she and her friends Isla and Sai crack codes and solve clues together. The books are as follows:

- Mr. Summerling’s Secret Code
- The Hidden Room
- Summer Island
- The Final Treasure

slauderdale | 182 comments - Halfway to Harmony (Barbara O'Connor)

According to Kirkus, main character Walter "is meek and has amblyopia."
