Where Does This Book Fit? the 2022 edition

someone living a double life, about a secret, there is a small amount of found family, some of it is set in the 1980s.

Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins
The Man who Died Twice by Richard Osman
I didn’t read either author last year, so I can’t plug them into that category.

First that jumps to mind is the BookTok prompt because that's what I had planned for it.

I was aiming for “non-patriarchal society” (convents count, right?) but I have other options there if someone has a better idea.

I am reading this right now and likely going to use it for "A Book you Know Nothing About" I literally picked it up because of the author, without knowing anything about the book itself. Also I am learning a lot while reading (despite it being fiction) so I think it works!

Actually, it IS a cruise ship, the Princess Andromeda.

Would it work for 'social horror'?

I'm using it for BookTok rec as all the marketing keeps saying it's a TikTok sensation.

Can confirm, Atlas Six is all over BookTok.

It's been a few years since I read it but ... Found family? Mal & Alina are in the orphanage together and form a bond.

Percy Jackson would fill the found family. In addition, they would also be books you could read in one sitting (well in my opinion at least).

dang I must not being seeing the same things as other people then because I think I have only seen one tiktok mention it but glad to know it will fit that prompt!

Tiktok definitely sticks you into little bubbles...people will mention something as trending on tiktok and I will have never seen it even a single time.

I agree with found family, but also there's a pretty big secret so you could use that category.

I'd like to know where do these books fit so I can read books that I already have on my shelf!
1. Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan.
2. On the Come Up by Angie Thomas.
3. I'll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson.
4. Not Forgetting the Whale by John Ironmonger.
5. Hang the Moon by Alexandria Bellefleur.
6. Parable of the Talents by Octavia E. Butler.
7. The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells.
Thank you very much in advance! ❤

Thank you so much!

A Monster Calls?"
I just finished Project Hail Mary and think the best fits are either 1. Found Family or 2. Two languages (as long as you are okay with counting languages that do not exist in real life).

I haven't read any of them, but I've seen movies of a couple, and recognize one of the authors.
I think Crazy Rich Asians could be considered a romance by a BIPOC author, at least if the book follows a similar plotline to the movie.
Parable of the Talents would be #OwnVoices SFF. It's also the second part of a duology if you want to read the first one again (or haven't read the first one yet).
War of the Worlds is set in Victorian times. You could also maybe bend it to social horror; Wells said it was a comment on imperialism and the impact of British colonialism in Tasmania.

Yes, it should fulfill the #ownvoices SFF prompt

Assuming there is any Elvish in it, it can work for the two languages prompt.

Thanks, Carol :)

Would the 2 other books in the series:
The Broken Kingdoms and The Kingdom of Gods, fill any other prompt?

It's pretty strongly implied that the main characters Oree & Yeine are Black, so this could work for OwnVoicesSFF. Not sure about where to fit the third. If you read a book by Jemisin in 2021, this would work for "another book by an author you read in 2021"?

It could be, I guess. I think a better category for that book is "misleading title." No one is trying to kill any mockingbirds.

I think it can count for social horror (but tbh I'm still not completely sure what "social horror" is), perhaps it could count for "found family," maybe you read another book by Whitehead last year, the truth about the abusive practices at the school is kept a secret, or you can find another book set in one of Tallahassee's sister cities.

I had them both listed as 'A different book by an author read in 2021', so I need to move one of them. Any ideas? (I already have a book for the 'book about a secret' and 'fave past popsugar challenge prompt' and these books are tricky to move. Help!
Thanks in advance :)

Thanks for the help. Currently I have The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris slotted as social horror. Any ideas for other spots for that one....then I could put The Nickel Boys into social horror.

Thanks, Alicia. I put it under A Book You Know Nothing About.
