LiteratiGlitterati Okay so not a fluffy rec unfortunately but I read this book like ten years ago that I actually remember all the time because it was so depressing, and I can never remember what it was called. I’ve tried googling countless times and looked at so many Goodreads lists, I feel like I’m losing my mind…

If this sounds familiar to anyone please let me know!

I can’t remember if this is Victorian era or early American, the main character is an unhappy wife with a young daughter, she befriends a slightly older wealthy single woman (I think a widow? And I think the context was maybe that the main character was working for the rich woman in some capacity). She’s completely captivating and slightly subversive, the main character begins to question her life and relationship with this very cold, demanding, controlling husband. The two women fall in love and begin an affair. The husband finds out, flies into a rage, and pushes the wife down the stairs. She’s injured and the daughter witnessed the whole thing, then the book ends with the two women and the little girl having run away together and living in a cozy cottage in a mountain forest somewhere far away.

Not a lot to go on but I think the title was a ___ & ____ format…
