SOLVED. Childrens Coming of Age- Lukewarm applesauce and lice. [s]

I remember a scene from a book where the girl gets lice and compares it to lukewarm applesauce on her head. Later, the mother sees a sign that says “we have ice” and freaks out because she thinks it says lice instead. Probably read between 2007-2012, but probably published a bit before that as all of my books are thrifted. I vaguely recall diary entries, but not 100% certain. I thought it may have been Life History of a star by Kelly Easton, but it is not. Thanks in advance!!
