This is the first of a quartet. I've long been meaning to read it,

I have started this one now. I used to read and enjoy 'Boarding school books' when I was younger, but somehow I feel the Catholic Boarding school setting will suck the joy out. Two chapters in and Nanda has been told off for reading and adventure book, and told it's not suitable reading; she had been given 'The Lives of the English Martyrs', a book where their violent deaths had left her stomach churning; she's eight years old!

I have just read that "Women's votes unnecessary.... Our lady had no vote and did not want one." 😟😠 The chapter on Nanda's thoughts during her retreat is extraordinary. It feels like she has been brainwashed. Her own personality has disappeared.
