I read this maybe late Elementary/early Junior High (2002-2004), it was a novel. I remember a boy who travels to another world in a bubble. He travels through space and a few times through water. I think the other species were elves? I think it was published in the 90s but do not quote me on that.

Boy was a chosen one who was needed to save the people of the world he traveled too. I think he also used the bubble to save another person (a girl I think).

Glad you found your book, James. Wow - Elwy Yost? I didn't know he wrote sci-fi for kids. Nice bit of Canadian trivia.
