Blue | 11 comments I probably read this around 2003-2007, and it was probably published sometime in the 2000's as well. I think the title had the word "magic" or "magician" in it. The cover of the book was an illustration of a white girl with dirty blonde hair dressed in a white blouse and a green skirt, with a red dragon behind her. I think they were standing in front of a harbor, too.

The plot, as far as I can recall, revolved around a young girl who recently became a wizard's/magician's apprentice, but was struggling to control her magical powers and learn spells. She kept making mistakes- I think at one point, a spell said while baking/cooking went horribly awry and the wizard had to fix the problem for her. She had low self-confidence and thought for sure she would never master her powers, but one day a dragon showed up to terrorize her town, while the wizard happened to be away, leading her to defend the town all by herself. She succeeded against the dragon (I don't think she physically fought it, rather cast a spell upon it somehow), earning the respect of the townsfolk and boosting her belief in herself.

I think the setting of the book was a seaside town in some fantasy world, and when the girl went to live with the wizard and learn from him, I think his home was on a mountain or in a tree or some place that was above ground.
