I am trying to remember the title of a book I read in high school that was similar to Harry Potter in it had a Hogwarts-like school/magic. I remember the kid got his magic from a painting in a museum and that there was a magical metal porcupine-like creature that the main character had to take care of. I also remember a plot point was the secondary character was supposed to be taken by witches. I think the big bad was a dragon disguised as a human.

Maybe The Hound of Rowan by Henry H. Neff? It came up on a search so I'm not sure all the details match but the general plot sounds similar.
That is it I recognize the title. Thank you it's been driving me crazy.
