David (theorydeer) | 2 comments Hi there! I read this book series somewhere between 2013 and 2015, and I physically pulled it from my middle schools library (as I was in middle school at the time). The language of the series is English, but I don't know around when it could have been written. I want to say it had to have been written no earlier than 2000, but I could be very wrong. I also dont remember the name nor gender of the author, and I currently only remember some of the plot details; not enough to make googling it easy though. I also don't remember the cover art, but I believe the first one was primarily blue and black, and I don't remember the genre/both genre's/specific genre(s) either, but I know for fact it's Fiction. Just unsure if the other genre could have been Adventure, Thriller, or what if anything at all.

Before I forget to mention it later, there are at least 3 books in the series. There are two main characters, I don't remember their names, so I'm going to call them Alex and Ben. The first book in the series is written in first person perspective from Alex, the second book is written in first person perspective from Ben, and the third book is written in Third Person Perspective, jumping back and forth between the very different stories they individually are living.

OK- so from what I can remember about the plot, there are these two friends (Alex and Ben, for ease) that end up in a mausoleum and I believe accidentally break what they call a "crucible", being a small embellished glass orb (unsure if they break it or if there's an earthquake that knocks it to the floor. "Crucibles" are this type of rare artifact where only a select few exist, and they're specifically placed in hidden spots throughout space/time (EX: In the ghost world, they had to teleport to the Roman Coliseum to find one of the crucibles). By breaking the crucible, something like a portal opens, that lets the boys cross over between their world (the living) and the world of ghosts. The world of ghosts also does not experience time or space like the living world, letting them teleport to different places in different historical periods (only the past to the present is available, not future (i think)). One I specifically remember to be the Roman Coliseum because they had gone there at least twice over the series. Initially both the boys enter and then leave the spirit world, but I think the reason Ben gets stuck as a ghost is because he goes back in and the portal closed after him, and without any more crucibles to break (to open a portal back), he gets stuck there. I think theres also a core function to crossing over that's like "if you're in the spirit world for too long, you cant go back to the living world".

The only characters name who I remember is Damien (could be spelled Damian maybe?, also will elaborate below), but I think I remember that it's the boy with the sister (for ease, Ben) who gets stuck as a ghost, as the next book focuses on interactions between Alex and Ben's Sister, who now have bonded through losing Ben.

Damien is a roman gladiator, and for some reason, has it out for the boys. It could be because he doesn't want them to break any of the crucibles? I'm unsure, but I know that he's some powerful antagonist that wants to kill them. Also real quick- they can die as a ghost if they're damaged by a certain type of weapon that's, because i dont know the right term, enchanted, which Damien happens to possess and keep on his person at all times. If they die by any other means than that weapon, they just disappear for a bit and come right back. (I think the 2nd or 3rd book introduces a type of Void that they can fall into, which can kill them permanently. That could totally be false and im confusing it with something else though, so dont take that as the most important piece of information).

In what I think is the second book, I think I remember the boys talking to Damien and converting him to the good side? They might of killed him, or one of the other antagonists on a higher level than him killed him for mutiny, but I remember either the 2nd or 3rd book resolving his problematic existence in the story.

I can't differentiate between the plot details in the 2nd and 3rd book, as I'm unsure if I ever even finished reading the 3rd, but I know at some point, the living boy (who I'm referring to as Alex) goes on a trip to a lake town. I think it's for a summer job where he's working at a boat rental place, or he's just there for the summer and has a crush on a girl working at the boat rental place. Somewhere in that storyline, whether that be book 2 or 3, Alex is on some sort of watercraft (could be a small boat or a jet ski, cant remember. All I remember is that it's a far less intimidating vehicle than the whatever's chasing him), where he's trying to escape some sort of threat on the water. I can't remember if it's a large oceanic creature like a Hydra, or if it's some evil ghosts on a bigger boat, but there's a threat to his life that Im under the impression he escapes somehow.

Functionality wise- ghosts naturally have these powers that they can get better with, that allows them to teleport through time/space in the ghost world, or even interact in ways with the human world, such as making things move or being able to temporarily project your voice to the living (volume scales with how skilled you are at the ability). Also, the ghost world is basically just a physical copy of the living world, so while ghosts can teleport to different places in history, the living people from that time are not there nor are any ghosts of people who died in that time, just the physical world itself (including manmade structures of course) and any other ghost that chooses to be visiting that place at the same time as well OR any ghost that has died there and never left. If a ghost chooses to exist in current time, they can see the world of the living, but the living cannot see or interact with ghosts.

In the first book, a ghost friend that Ben (ghost boy) made in the ghost world teaches him how to use his ghost powers to interact with his living friend, using said powers through deep concentration basically. Just like every other story where a character finds out about their natural powers, Ben is not good at it at first, but gets better. Not proficient I don't think, but good enough to give Alex the occasional signal that he's trying to communicate with him.

At some point in either the 2nd or 3rd book, Ben has teleported to a farm? Unsure of the exact time period in relation to what the living world's "present" is, but theres a girl in a barn who died there when a fire that burnt the barn down. I believe she died in the barn fire because someone locked her in there (who i think could have been her father). Ben meets her and becomes friends with her? I think he also teaches her how to use the Ghost Powers but I could be wrong.

I hope this has been enough information! I just need the title for one of the books and I can use google from there on out, but if you find all 3 and would like to tell me, that would be awesome! If you have any more questions I'll do my best to answer them, but I believe this post contained everything I know (or think I know). I apologize for not remembering almost anything in the book clearly, which has especially made it hard for me to find, leading to me posting the question here. I know it already greatly adds to the word count of this post by me saying "I think" and "I believe" to everything, but I just want to say- take everything with those labels in front of it with a grain of salt. I truly do not know if I have confused any parts of the book with something else, or if they just don't exist in the book at all, but I've included everything that I believe to be true or close to the truth, in the hopes that it will help someone find the title of the books.

Thanks for reading all of this mess haha. If you read everything and made it this far, I ~do~ genuinely appreciate it.
