Standard Book Qualifications – Overview & Index

Welcome! These are the standard rules that apply to most challenges in this group. Some moderators may have extra or different rules for their individual challenges. If so, those rules take priority for that challenge and will be clearly stated within the challenge.

We’ve split the qualifications into separate posts so you can quickly find the answer you need:

1️⃣ General Requirements
2️⃣ Audiobook Requirements
3️⃣ Manga, Comics & Graphic Novels
4️⃣ Restricted Genres
5️⃣ Other Book Formats
6️⃣ Team & Partner Challenge Rules
7️⃣ Readathon Book Qualifications
8️⃣ Rule Conflicts & Clarifications

💡 Tip: When in doubt, ask your Challenge Moderator before starting a book to be sure it qualifies.

General Requirements
These are the general rules and guidelines that your books should follow for most challenges. Some moderators may have extra or different rules for their individual challenges. If so, those rules take priority for that challenge and will be clearly stated within the challenge.

Minimum Length:
All books, whether physical or e-book, must be at least 100 pages long to qualify.

Page Count Source:
Use the edition page count that matches the version you read. (Example: If you read the Kindle edition, use the Kindle page count.)

Language:
Any book in any language will count, as long as the book meets the other requirements listed here.

Re-reads:
Allowed if it has been at least six months since you last completed the book.

DNF (Did Not Finish):
Books you did not finish do not count for challenges, as they have not been completed

Completion Window:
Books must be started and finished within the challenge period to count. (If you start early or finish late, it will not qualify.)

Audiobooks
We love audiobooks! They’re a fantastic way to enjoy books on the go, multitask, or just relax your eyes. Here are the rules to make sure your audiobooks qualify for challenges:

Minimum Length:
Audiobooks must meet the minimum 100 pages requirement to qualify for a challenge.

Page Count Source:
• Use the default Goodreads edition page number
• For large-print default editions, use the next version in the list
No Print Equivalent:
For audiobooks without a print equivalent, use the following formula to determine eligibility and to calculate page count:
Pages = (Minutes x 150) ÷ 250
Example: 4hr 15m = 255 minutes x 150 = 38,250 words ÷ 250 = 153 pages

Dramatized Audio Adaptations / Graphic Audio:
These are accepted only using the above formula, not the default edition page count.

Manga, Comics, & Graphic Novels
Wondering if your manga, comic, or graphic novel counts? Here’s how we determine eligibility:

1. Word Count Requirement
Book must have a minimum word count of 30,000, verified using AR Bookfind sites:
US: https://www.arbookfind.com/default.aspx
UK: https://www.arbookfind.co.uk/default....
AU: https://www.arbookfind.com.au/default...
2. Page Count Calculation
If the book is not found on AR Bookfind, calculate eligibility using this formula:
Adjusted Page Count = Edition Page Count × 0.25
The adjusted page count must be at least 100 pages for the book to qualify.
Your book is eligible if it meets either the minimum word count requirement (via AR Bookfind) or the minimum adjusted page count requirement (if not listed on AR Bookfind).

Logging Your Pages:
When logging your reading for challenges, always use the adjusted page count (physical pages × 0.25) as your official page total.

For non-competitive individual challenges, no word count or page restrictions apply.

Restricted Genres
Special rules apply to some genres, here’s how page counts are calculated and what qualifies:

Page Count Calculation:
For MPG (main page genre) Plays, Poetry, Cookbooks, Travel Guides, Children's books, calculate pages as:
Pages = Edition Page Count × 0.5
Minimum Length:
A minimum of 100 pages (after adjustment) is required for these genres.

Children’s Books:
Only Middle Grade and chapter books qualify. Picture books do not count.

If a book is tagged as MPG Middle Grade (regardless of whether it also has an MPG Children’s tag), it is treated under the General Requirements with no page count adjustment or restrictions.

Other Formats
These additional formats are accepted with the following guidelines:

Fanfiction, Web Serials, Beta & ARCs:
Accepted if they are listed on Goodreads and meet the page count minimum.

Short Story Collections, Anthologies & Omnibuses:
In general, these formats are allowed without additional restrictions. However, if you want to use the entire book's page count, you must read the entire book. If you prefer to count individual works separately, please follow these guidelines:
Short Story Collections and Anthologies:
If you read an individual story within a collection or anthology that is also published as a standalone novella, you may count that story as a separate book using the Goodreads default edition of the standalone novella. If the individual story is not published separately, it may not be used for a challenge.

Omnibuses:
Each contained book can be counted separately if it meets the eligibility criteria.
Boxed Sets:
Boxed sets are generally multiple separate books grouped together (e.g., The Lord of the Rings series with 3 distinct volumes).
• If you are reading a physical edition of any book within a boxed set, you must count each book separately.

• When reading a digital edition that is labeled on Goodreads as a "boxed set" and is listed as one book (e.g. Mistborn Trilogy Boxed Set), you may choose to count each book separately or count the entire set as one book, provided eligibility requirements are met.

Team/Partner Challenge Rules
Team challenges are a group effort, and your fellow readers count on you to show up and participate. To keep the experience positive and fair for everyone, these rules are in place:

Weekly Check-Ins
Stay engaged! Check in with your team every week. This keeps communication flowing and helps everyone stay motivated.

Communication & Absences
Life happens, and sometimes you can’t participate as planned. If you need to miss a week or drop out, please let your team and the moderators know as soon as possible.

Providing notice allows us to find a replacement and keeps the team moving forward smoothly.

Ghosting Policy
Ghosting (disappearing without any communication) is considered disrespectful and unfair to your team.

If you ghost without notice, you will be replaced on the team and receive a strike against your record.

Strikes & Consequences
Accumulating three strikes within six months will result in a three-month timeout from participating in team or partner challenges.

A 48-hour notice period is given before a strike is officially issued, allowing time to clarify or resolve the situation.

Rule Conflicts & Clarifications
Sometimes individual challenges have special rules or exceptions. When that happens, those challenge-specific rules take precedence over the standard rules outlined here.

Clear communication helps everyone have a fair and fun experience!

Challenge-Specific Rules:
If a Challenge Moderator specifies different rules for their challenge, those rules apply for that challenge only.

Unsure About Eligibility?
If you’re ever unsure whether a book or format qualifies for a particular challenge, please ask your Challenge Moderator before logging it.

Dispute Resolution:
If there’s ever a disagreement or question about a book’s eligibility, the final decision will rest with the challenge’s head moderator or the admin team.

Grace Periods & Flexibility:
Sometimes moderators may grant grace periods or exceptions in special circumstances. These are handled on a case-by-case basis and won’t override the general rules unless clearly stated.

Logging Mistakes:
If you accidentally log a book that doesn’t qualify, please notify the moderator as soon as possible so corrections can be made.

Updates to Rules:
Rules may be updated periodically to improve clarity or fairness. Always check the latest version of the rules for each challenge.

Ask Questions:
No question is too small! If you’re unsure about anything related to the rules, don’t hesitate to ask a moderator.
