Janice (jamasc) | 59973 comments Help/Discussion: Site 33, The Singing Ringing Tree, Lancashire, England

1. Location: Lancashire, England - is a non-metropolitan county and a ceremonial county in North West England.
Read a book that is set in England but not in a city with a population over 1, 000,000.

2. About: The Singing Ringing Tree is a wind powered sound sculpture resembling a tree set in the landscape of the Pennine hill range overlooking Burnley, in Lancashire, England.
Read a book with Wind or Sound in the title.

3. Souvenir: Pan Flute - The pan flute is named after Pan, the Greek god of nature and shepherds often depicted with such an instrument.
Read a book set in Greece or written by a Greek author.

♞ Pat Gent | 629 comments Can "wind" be nested in another word, such as windy or swindled, or does it have to be stand alone.

And does WIND as in "wind-up" work as well, or does it have to refer to blowing air?

message 3: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments It has to be a separate word. Only variation that is allowed is plural, so 'winds' would be okay.

The meaning of the word doesn't matter. However, I'm not sure if wind-up would be okay, as wind is not really a stand-alone word. Janice is away for a few days but maybe one of the other mods knows.

Thanks, Peggy. That pretty much answers my questions. I ran across a couple of titles that got me thinking about whether or not I was over thinking it or if I wasn't thinking broadly enough. I'm good to go now!

Katrisa | 4475 comments So, for English village can it be a fictional English village? I wanted to read a Miss Marple mystery which are set in the village of St. Mary Mead but it's not a real place

message 6: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Hm, this one is tricky! If I place myself in Janice's shoes I think she'd say it's fine, because it's so clearly supposed to be English. So go for it :)

message 7: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19196 comments I agree. I think as long as it is clearly in England and not a city it fine. A fictional English village should work.

message 8: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19212 comments Ah ha! I see what you did there Kristie. I agree now I have worked it out.

For those who were like me, Kristie's point is to err on the side of caution. Don't choose a fictional English city, as you won't be able to tell what the population is.

Better to stick with obvious options nowhere near approaching 1 mill for the fictional ones.

message 9: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4475 comments Thanks guys! I had no idea the village was fictional until this task :)

Leslie | 592 comments Would you accept Sounded for "Sound"?

message 11: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I don't think that will work Leslie. The only exceptions are plurals that don't alter the world.

message 12: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59973 comments There are other groups that allow for embedded words. We don't unless specifically addressed in a task. Please refer to the rules.

Grainne Coughlan | 1315 comments My ancient history wouldn't be the best 😅😆 Is this set in Greece? Part of the book is set in Greece but parts of it are set in Troy and Sparta.

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller x

You made me google to get the answer. Troy is Turkey, and Sparta was ancient Greece. As long as Greece/Sparta represent 50% of the story, you're good.

message 15: by Grainne (new)

Grainne Coughlan | 1315 comments Thank you Janice! I wasn't sure so I thought it best to ask. I started reading it thinking that it was set in Greece but then I started to wonder if the blood pledge to the king was going to happen Greece or somewhere else hahaha.

Hi Gunit Kaur,
I read both of these books. I think either would fit, but probably The Silent Companions more.
