It's that time of year again--the time when all of the annual reading challenges prepare to reset! It's conceivable that our local group will return to in-person meetings sometime in the coming months, but I'll keep this online group active, too, because it's always so interesting to see what our far-flung friends are reading each month! This is open to everybody, by the way, so feel free to invite your other bookish friends who might be looking for a nice laid-back challenge for 2022.

The name of the game is still GenreLand, but we've experienced a bit of mission creep and now we tend to assign prompts or thematic elements to each month of the game. The "rules" of the game are for each player to read something fitting the monthly prompt, or to instead play their wildcard for the year and read whatever they like, and report back to the group how it went. Do we keep score? Uh, no, not really. We're just here to talk books and have fun.

But we do need some fresh prompts for the coming year! So use this thread to share your ideas for prompts you would like to see. Ideally, they are concepts that can be summarized in one to two words or at most a short phrase. I'll start by listing some below, and I hope you will follow suit. After a week or two, I will start a thread for a sort of semifinals round where each of you can upvote a certain number (depending on how many there are in total) of the suggestions. Then sometime in December we will do a final picks round. (The format will be determined by the level of participation.)

Also, what about something involving doubles or twins, since it is 2022?

Jacqie | 93 comments I've been trying to read more books that go along with heritage months, like African American, AAPI, Indigenous, Women's History, Pride, but it's unlikely we'd do all of these! I suppose that's an American thing, too.

a book with a non-human protagonist

a book that's had a movie or TV show made based on it that YOU HAVE NOT SEEN

a book about a place you want to travel (in 2022?)

climate change fiction or non-fiction

journey/road trip book

a book about a period of history you'd (in theory...) like to visit

a retelling of a myth or fairy tale

a book about books or reading

a translated book

a book picked to lift your spirits

Jacqie | 93 comments Here's some more from me.

A book with a cover featuring your favorite color.

A book about human/animal interactions.

A book that takes place mostly outside.

A book that makes you hungry when you read it.

A book about art or artist(s).

A book featuring a holiday.

A book that might make you nostalgic.

A book with magic in it.

A mystery by an author of color.

A book that you think you "should" read.

A book that you've wanted to read for a long time but that has been put off.

A book with a protagonist over who is over 50 years old.

A book by an author you admire.

A book about a culture other than your own.

A book that takes place on/in a place other than Earth.

A book that gets you further in a series that you like.

A book set in a school.

A book about immigration.

A book about time travel.

A debut author.

A book that a friend told you about.

A book about a competition.

A family epic.

A book that everyone seems to have been assigned to read in school except for you.

That may be way too many. :)
