Meagan | 2 comments I am trying to remember a certain book I read probably in fifth or sixth grade (roughly around 2003/2004, but it was "older" at the time). I vividly remember there being two across the street neighbors and there was a school redistricting and they drew the line down the center of the street, forcing the two friends to go to two different middle schools. The girls decided to rebel by refusing to wash their hair until they were allowed to go to the same school (or something like that). I am pretty sure it had "sixth grade" or "middle school" in the title. Sixth Grade Secrets by Louis Sachar and Sixth Grade Can Really Kill You by Barthe DeClements keep coming up in my searches and they both look and sound familiar and seem to be published around the same time, but I am not coming across this specific detail in any of my searches and I feel like the hair-washing refusal was a big part of the book. I will probably just request both books at my library but was curious if anyone knew which book I was talking about off the top of their head. Thanks in advance!

Daisy (daisyporter) | 1200 comments I can rule out the Barthe DeClements for you - that doesn't happen in that book, which I just reread.

Daisy (daisyporter) | 1200 comments It's been longer since I read the Sachar book, but I don't think that's it either. Part of the plot does revolve around a girl's long hair being cut.

I can also rule out Sixth-Grade Sleepover :)

Kat (tadpoledrain) | 547 comments Oh, I think I have read this. If so, I would have read it probably in the 80s or early 90s at the latest, if that helps narrow down the publication date. I'll keep thinking.

Kat (tadpoledrain) | 547 comments Try Report to the Principal's Office! by Jerry Spinelli (or possibly one of the other books in the series, if the first one isn't your book).

Sorry, I'm on my phone so I can't post the right kind of link, but hopefully this works. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8...

Kat (tadpoledrain) | 547 comments And here's a description of the book that talks about one of the girls refusing to wash her hair and her shirt.
