I didn't know that you live in BC. Are you affected by the floods? I noticed that all the mushrooms were taken off the shelves when I went grocery shopping yesterday and wondered if we normally get them from BC and the supply has been interrupted. Could be some other reason, but seemed to be the logical suspicion.

I need to put this attraction on my travel list for when I get my life back. The centre looks interesting.

Osoyoos is a beautiful area. We live in the interior of the province so not affected by the floods other than the highways being closed and supply chains interrupted. We were fortunate we had done our grocery shopping right before the panic shopping so weren't affected by that either. I feel bad for our restaurants though ... they were just opening up from COVID and then they ran out of food and now many are closed again :(

Janice (jamasc) | 60019 comments It was a horrific tragedy. I can't stop looking at the pictures.

They have more heavy rain forecast for the Lower Mainland and heavy snow for the mountain passes. It's never ending right now. I'm not sure how much more they can take.

message 205: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60019 comments Yikes! I hope the forecast is wrong.

I hope it is wrong too! The impact of the last storm has been devastating in this part of BC. The next atmospheric river is forecast to arrive tomorrow here in the Fraser Valley, one of the areas hardest hit last week, and it has already started raining again.

Stay safe down there! Our poor province :(

message 209: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments I was horrified by the news reports. The weather is turning against us all over the world, scary times. My heart goes out to all in BC.

message 210: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments It gets astonishingly little news coverage here... from what I read here it sounds similar to the floods we had this summer. Stay safe!

message 211: by Beth (new)

Beth (eparks4232) | 2562 comments Hadn't heard about the floods, but know that experience well from time in Houston. Thinking of you all now!

Shannon SA (shannonsa) | 5 comments That is terrible. It is frightening what the power of water can do. Good wishes for everyone affected by these storms.

message 214: by Trudy (new)

Trudy (trudyan) | 1779 comments One of the consequences of the flood is that an estimated 500 dairy cows, 40,000 hogs and more than 100,000 chickens were killed due to the flood waters. Words can't describe how this has affected the community.

Shannon SA (shannonsa) | 5 comments Oh No that is so sad. The poor creatures.

message 216: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1795 comments I'm going to be right in the middle of all the restoration after the flooding, I work for the City of Abbotsford Building Department. We're already in the thick of it, most of the Department is out doing Rapid Damage Assessments of the buildings they can get to. Lots of the buildings are still underwater though, at the lowest point of the former lake that is now Sumas Prairie (if anyone wants to know, the Cole Road Rest Area in Abbotsford BC is approximately ground zero). It was drained in 1920 and now apparently the Sumas and Nooksack Rivers (in the USA) want it back. :)
And we're gearing up to issue restoration permits for all the buildings, they've assessed 17000 so far. This is almost all farm land, lots of poultry and dairy farms. Blueberry farms.

Personally not flooded, I live in Chilliwack though, so I was stuck with no way out of town for 4 days. All the routes were flooded, or damaged or had rock slides or mud slides. Drove up last Sunday when one long and slow route opened up out of town, to stay with a friend so I could make it to work.

They are hoping to open the Trans Canada Highway today, everyone please cross your fingers!! I wanna be able to go home and sleep in my own bed.

And also, I want to add that even though they lost 500 cows, they saved a lot. It was a long and ongoing effort to save as many animals as possible. Unfortunately the chickens are hard to catch with speed and there are a ridiculous amount of poultry barns in the area, and they are big. Say 60' x 200' per barn, 1 or 2 stories, are normal sizes and I'm not sure how many chickens they fit in those but it is in excess of 10,000. So, bad as it sounds, it could have been way, way worse for animal deaths. Those are only a small portion of the animals in the area.

message 217: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1795 comments I got some better numbers:

"The BC Dairy Association says around 450 cows were killed in the floods. 23,000 cows are located in the area."

"There’s 28 chicken farms — meat-producing farms — and of those 28, there’s about 1.4 million birds that are placed. But we know that the losses are over 100,000 at least. We don’t know a definitive number."

I can't find anything about overall hog numbers though.

message 218: by Shannon SA (new)

Shannon SA (shannonsa) | 5 comments Thank you for the info, Dawn. I hope there's lots to be salvaged and that the restoration can help everyone recover well.
