Really?! That's just sad, then! I think I'll read the first few books at least, but I might just end up feeling the same way as you do, lol, and be heartbroken about the rest of the series.

I have heard of really freaky things happening to people who did or tried to do witchcraft. From a Christian perspective, that sort of thing might even work, one would just be communicating to demons instead of loved ones when one does occult and speaking the devil's language when practicing actual witchcraft.
Satan does have power, and as the "prince of this world," both he and his demons can influence tons of bad stuff to happen. That's just my take on it! I used to think that witchcraft never actually did anything, and though that might sometimes be true, it definitely isn't always the case.

Yeah, I have often wondered if people really did hear from someone they thought was a dead loved one, but it was actually a demon mimicking that person. I used to think people were always faking when they would say these kinds of things happened, but, while there are lots of charlatans out there, I do not think it is always fake.

True, but you guys are viewing it for the perspective that witchcraft is used for black magic. One of the core beliefs of Wicca is that everything you do comes back threefold, and one of the oaths you take before you start practicing magick is to never use it to hurt others. Sure, there may be a few people who use it for harm, and the Devil can definitely do that for them, but it’s a vast minority. Most witches are using it for the other things I mentioned- purity, healing, protection, cleanliness, enlightenment, etc., and those are things that Satan will never be able to properly give. They come from God alone.
(For example, I never met someone with a voodoo doll, and I was in many different Wiccan circles and even a few covens.)

Ah, very helpful. So if in the example I used, why would that be considered black magic or hurtful? (Speaking to the dead)

That was more of a response to Lily, should’ve clarified that. 😅 I agree with you, it’s probably them actually chatting with Satan. And I’m glad I cleared things up! :)

Gotcha😊

I thought the Barbie movie was pretty good! It’s definitely NOT for little kids though, so definitely 13+. They make a few inappropriate jokes and there are some suggestive scenes. It has very strong female empowerment (is that the right term lol?) themes. It’s mostly just funny, the plot isn’t very developed or anything, and the dances are very obviously choreographed lol.

A Thousand Hearbeats was a beautiful book. However, there was a scene that was inappropriate in my view, since the characters weren’t married. I later figured this out when it was too late 😭.
I think that’s the wrong book. A Thousand Heartbeats is by Kierra Kass and Once Upon a Broken Heart is by Stephanie Garber
Hey, everyone! I'm new here!
I just devoured this thread! It's awesome!
About message 90 by Lola:
I used to read a lot of contemporary romance in the past and Colleen Hoover writes mostly smut. I consider Ugly Love an er*tic romance, it has explicit s*x scenes. Most of her books have s*x scenes. There is a movie in production that is an adaptation of her book It Ends with Us, starring Blake Lively. If I remember correctly this too has a bunch of s*x scenes. So yeah, Coleen's books are not clean.

I just finished The Lunar Cronicles (Cinder,Scarlet, Cress and Winter)
I'm glad I made the right decision to only read the 4 main books. I have no interest in reading Levana's story since she is the villain, but the 4 books in the series are really good, clean, with no swearing, and no saying the Lord's name in vain. There are a few kisses, but I remember they being pretty tame. (I honestly can't remember the "Scarlet kiss" that was mentioned... The only thing that made me furrow my brows regarding Scarlet and Wolf was (view spoiler)

Now I need some help:
I'm considering starting this one next:
Is it clean? One of the authors wrote this:
Does that mean there is a queer character and that's it, or there is going to be a queer couple?

I did, there's no information there. I decided to risk it. I'm 40% into the story, so far no swearing, and no romance whatsoever, but there is a male character that's flirty with other male and female characters.

Hey I read this a while back and really enjoyed it. I can't remember anything explicit happening between any of the characters. I have a feeling there was some romance, can't remember between who but honestly nothing in my memory is telling me there were any spicy scenes. :)
Bella wrote: "How is Once Upon a Broken Heart"I've read once upon a broken heart and the ballad of after and although I extremely disliked them, nothing really explicit happens in the romance. There's a lot of lustful gazes thrown around and kissing and sexual tension but apart from some mild touching and impassioned kissing I would say it's okay...BAD but okay.

You've got this!! I'm reading The way of kings part 1 at the moment and struggling for the same reason but it's worth it 💪🏻
It's official. I can't continue reading Aurora Rising. I'm stopping at 55%. It's YA, right?! So all the main characters are between 17-19 yrs. One of the MC is Scarlett, I believe she's 19. She's constantly talking about her past relationships, she has about 50 ex-boyfriends. That was something that bothered me quite a lot. But overall, the book is boring, the characters are shallow, there's too much world-building and not enough "stuff" happening. There are many other things bad about this book. If the authors had a checklist to fulfill an agenda, they marked all the points.

It is discouraging when a book gives the impression the author was just checking the agenda boxes. Choosing our soul-health over the allure of a good story is not easy, but so worth it in the end.😊

What is your opinion on paranormal fiction (such as stories that involve ghosts)? I don't mean horror, by the way. I mean genres like mystery.
Lol! No problem, Sharon! ♡ GR was a bit weird for me today too!
Cari wrote: "What is your opinion on paranormal fiction (such as stories that involve ghosts)? I don't mean horror, by the way. I mean genres like mystery."Mm, I don't really know. I don't read that genre, but I don't think it'd be bad, per se. I'd say it's fine as long as it's not like super weird and creepy paranormal stuff, but that's just my opinion.

I think it really depends on the book and your convictions. If it glorifies death, Satan, or evil, then I think I would pass. If it is just fantasy, such as the ghosts in Harry Potter, then I don't have a hard time with it. However, if one's convictions are such that the conscience is "pricked", then I would steer clear. The Holy Spirit knows best what we each can handle.

I hope you have better luck with it! I looked around and found Skyward by Brandon Sanderson. I love sci-fi and this series looks clean clean clean if all my research pans out to be correct!

I don’t remember whose review I read, but I shelved it as “do not read”. Usually books in that category are there for content issues. Wish I could remember more to help you out…
Hey, Helena! I haven't read the book, but I did a little digging for ya:
- There is some heavy kissing and a bit more, but apparently nothing is explicitly described.
- It's a romance, not a dystopian society kinda thing.
- There is a r@pe scene, but I'm not sure how descriptive it is.
- It's a love...square?! There are three guys fighting for the female main character.
- Some people say it's a 13+ read, some say it's a 15+ read. Some said the themes are a bit too mature for it to be YA.
I used the "questions"section of the book page to dig those informations, I hope it helps!

No problem! From what I read in the reviews, people didn't like the writing style as well... lots of complaints about that, so I don't think you'll be missing out on a good book, you know?
Personally, I try to avoid books with cussing and sins of impurity, even if it isn't an occasion of sin for me. (For the latter, if it's portrayed delicately and in a wrong perspective, then it can be fine.) I just don't like to give support to that kind of writing by reading it. Now, if the book is a classic or something I can get a lot out of, then it's a different story. Classics usually write about these things in a more sensitive manner, whereas a chick-flick YA novel would be writing it for thrills and nothing else. So, unlike music and sometimes tv, I do have exceptions for books, but I'm picky about those exceptions. I think that Catholics (and Christians in general) should have their entertainment give glory to God in some way. Sometimes you can do that even if the entertainment has cussing/sins of impurity/etc., but if it's done in a sinful way and has no moral to it, then I don't see how that benefits your soul.
Joyce wrote: "No problem! From what I read in the reviews, people didn't like the writing style as well... lots of complaints about that, so I don't think you'll be missing out on a good book, you know?"Probably not! I heard one good thing about it but I guess that was a minority. XD Thanks again!
Y’all. I started reading this book called the Law of Moses (u guys probably saw) and it was soooooo good at first but then it started getting real questionable 🤨(screwing each other by page 60?? umm no thanks). It was an adult novel and i don’t really read those *quite* yet, but i also didn’t read the goodreads reviews, so that was basically on me 😂anyways the moral of the story is still… DON’T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER!!!
Also, does anyone know if Six of Crows is a good book? I know it’s really popular, but idk about the content 🤷🏾♀️
i LOVE six of crows! idk what your comfort level with content is, but it is kinda dark. it's about gangs in the slums of the city....ahem. there's some violence, a little gore, some language (not too bad but there is one f bomb), and there is one same sex couple in the second book.
Cari wrote: "What is your opinion on paranormal fiction (such as stories that involve ghosts)? I don't mean horror, by the way. @Liza, Kacie posted about that book a few posts ago, so I would check back a few posts. I would add that there are many morally gray (some *dark* gray😅) characters and also some worldview issues. It really is well-written, though.
Hi! Has anyone here read the Bartimaeus trilogy? I'm a big Harry Potter fan, so fantasy magic isn't necessarily a problem for me, but the blurb mentions the MC summoning a djinni, which sounds a little concerning :/

@Sharon, on some level, maybe. He might be able to give you temporary peace because you did a spell, but he could never provide lasting, secure peace, and he wouldn’t even be able to give away even that little fragment of it if God decided against it. Satan can try, but he really has no power here.
Let’s also use the example of physical healing. Years ago, when my grandpa was in the hospital, I had cast a spell to heal him. Had it worked (it didn’t; he’s now partying it up with Jesus), credit would’ve been given to the “power within me” and the “energy that I had manifested from the universe”. But since it didn’t, I was told that I must’ve done the spell wrong, try again next time, that can happen, we’re only human. That’s typically moreso of how Satan works in this belief system.
