message 59: by Justin ••• (last edited Nov 12, 2021 10:47PM) (new)

Justin ••• (kjustin) I have a number of nonfiction books partway done, but the only one I've finished so far is A Self Portrait by Kahlil Gibran, which is just a very slim collection of letters, almost all from Gibran to other people. I've also read a couple other books by him, including his best-known one The Prophet, and my main problem is that both Kahlil and his supporters genuinely did think of him as some kind of prophet or revolutionary thinker.

message 60: by Linda (new)

Linda Ege | 13 comments 3rd book of Nonfiction November. From the ashes by Jesse Thistle. . A memoir about an indigenous man from Canada and how he went from extreme drug addiction to being PHD Candidate

message 61: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 34 comments For Collections I finished the essay collection Before You Loose Your Faith. I also read two nonfiction picture books Dear Mr. Dickens and a new book by Misty Copeland Black Ballerinas: My Journey to Our Legacy. Both were quite good if anyone in the group knows or has young readers who may want to participate in Nonfiction November.

message 62: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 29 comments For Industry I finished Franchise. The Golden Arches In Black America by Marcia Chatelain. Very good. My next read is Lady in Waiting: My Extraordinary Life In The Shadow Of The Crown by Anne Glenconner. I will it for style.

message 64: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 34 comments I finished She Kills Me which I guess could fall under industry because some of the women made quite a bit if money as poisoners for hire.

Oh wow! I remember when Lady Anne Glenconner was on Graham Norton promoting that book - so funny! Her life has had some sad moments too as I understand but a great raconteur.

message 68: by Amy (new)

Amy | 7 comments Finished two more
Shearwater by Roger Morgan-Grenville awesome I learned so much. I think the style prompt fits the pelagic birds best.
and
Between two Kingdoms been wanting to read and saw others were reading it. So treatment would be the obvious one for that.

message 69: by Audrey (new)

Audrey | 22 comments I read: Black Snake: Standing Rock, the Dakota Access Pipeline, and Environmental Justice by Katherine Wiltenburg Todrys for Industry.

I read: Changing to Thrive by James and Janice Prochaska for Treatment.

I am running out of days so I am not sure what I will try to fit in now.

message 70: by Howard (new)

Howard (howard0944) | 10 comments I finished 100 Ways to Improve Your Writing: Proven Professional Techniques for Writing With Style and Power That is a great book for any budding writer. I'm on the last (11th) book in my list: Physics of the Future: How Science Will Shape Human Destiny and Our Daily Lives by the Year 2100 I'm 1/3 into the book and he is annoying me with the frequent use of the phrase "Software Program" because "Software" is a computer program!

message 71: by Ron (new)

Ron I'm almost done with High School Tegan & Sara .

I grew up listening to Tegan and Sara having discovered their music on 'Grey's Anatomy'. As I've read their memoir I have loved every moment of it. The intensity as to what they went through is just...I can't even find the right words to describe it.

I give myself a rating system of 1-10. This book certainly deserves a 10 as it is that good for me.

It's without being biased too. I love coming-of-age stories, I've come to like reading memoirs/biographies/autobiographies, and this one just marks off every category. The themes in the book alone are enough to keep me engaged despite the trials they went through. The fact that Tegan & Sara are so open and transparent really shows a great amount of strength.

message 77: by Audrey (new)

Audrey | 22 comments I started "As we have always done" by Leanne Betasmosake Simpson. It is written in a very academic way so it will probably take me quite some time to finish.

message 81: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3 comments I just finished Chop Suey Nation: The Legion Cafe and Other Stories from Canada’s Chinese Restaurants By Ann Hui. It's really good and it goes into the history of Chinese emigration to Canada as well as the stories of the families that run the various restaurant's.

message 82: by Amy (new)

Amy | 7 comments Just finished Finding The Mother Tree:Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest by Suzanne Simard. I highly recommend this book if you love trees and want to understand better how the natural world is all connected, if you love conservation that actual heals not destroys. I picked this book for Industry prompt as Suzanne comes from a logging family and the work she first did before finding her passion and healing.
