Fantasy or Science Fiction - Main character travels back and forth between Earth and a place where Salt is used as currency. Read 2000-2018.

I read this sometime between 2000-2018. The book is either fantasy or science fiction because the main character traveled back and forth to the setting of the story from modern-day earth.

I think the main character is a man, and the place he travels to (or sent to by magic portal) uses salt as currency and they measure tiny amounts on scales. When he goes back to earth, he buys table salt and puts it in a pouch to take back with him. The people measuring the salt are amazed at the fine grade of the salt because I think theirs tends to be gray and lumpy. I don't remember much else about the plot.
