How am I supposed to plan the books I'll read if I don't know what the last letter of my "previous" read will be???

Listopia does not exist for this category. It doesn't seem feasibly to create a Listopia for this one. We're all on our own!!!

message 2: by Meredith! (new)

Meredith! (wanderingartist05) | 12 comments Honestly, I think I'm going to use this category as a "free space" ;)

message 3: by Brandon (new)

Brandon Harbeke | 696 comments If your TBR is big enough (and you have quick access to its titles), then you can just find a book on it with the title's first letter matching the last letter of the title you just finished. You can also look for anything with this pattern within the TBR and try to lay hands on both simultaneously.

The books I'm reading right now end with "D" and "E", so I could easily find a title that started with one of those letters that would be interesting. I'm not sure why they chose an X example for the challenge post unless they really love XOXO.

I think it's because the book previous in the list was The Ex Hex, which ended in X.

message 5: by Brandon (new)

Brandon Harbeke | 696 comments M,

That's how they got there, but as the creators of the list, they could have ordered their list differently to get a different result. For example, it could have been prompt #10 and used "H" as a first letter (following Akata Witch in the #9 spot).

message 6: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 65 comments I rarely complain about prompts but I really don't like this one. It makes it really hard to plan, and I get most of my books from the library so often don't know what's coming up. I may skip this, for the first time ever.

message 7: by Alex (new)

Alex Richmond | 65 comments This one seems pretty easy to me? Whenever you read a book, check what the last letter of it is, then see if you have any books you want to read that start with that letter. If you don't, check again after you finish another book!

It sounds easy but I don't know that it will be that easy when I get to it. Maybe I'm wrong. Again, as a library reader, I can't just see if I have any books I want to read that start with that letter. I have to see what the library has available, and it would be a book that doesn't fit another prompt... IDK. Just sounds complicated.

message 10: by Joshua (new)

Joshua (hitthefunkybeats) | 126 comments Brandon, maybe it was so they could show off a harder to find letter like X?

As someone who works in a library, feel free to talk to us about this prompt when you feel up to doing it/get around to it. We're more than happy to look up different things, it's kind of the best part of our day.

message 12: by Erica (new)

Erica | 1256 comments You could just use the last book you read for 2021's challenge if you need to a have a plan.

message 13: by Nancy (last edited Dec 01, 2021 02:20PM) (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 65 comments But that wouldn't be the last book I read since I only have one more to go and I will be reading other books before I start the 2022 challenge.

Am I the only one that thinks this will be harder than it sounds? At least in practice.

My other objection is it means there will be an empty space in my plan, and I abhor empty spaces. I need to have something slotted in.

Maybe when it gets to the last week of December you'll have a good idea if the book you're reading then will be the last one you'll finish this year, so you'll have a few days to find a book that starts with the letter that one finishes with and can be the first thing you read next year? That way you'll have it done and out of the way so it can stop causing you all this stress.

message 15: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 65 comments I'm not stressed. I just don't like the prompt.

You're definitely not the only one!!! I'm having a very "thanks! I hate it!" reaction to this one. Like, sure, I can find a book. But I'm still not happy about it.

message 17: by 9987 (new)

9987 | 35 comments I figure I'll fill in most of my challenge and see what letter I have most at the end of titles and pick a book with that letter. That way I will hopefully have multiple points in the year I could read it.

message 18: by Sofia (new)

Sofia Samu | 82 comments Idk the 2022 list kinda sucks and a lot of prompts are very limiting (it's like they want us to read very specific books), so I think this prompt is pretty easy and it's good to have it.

message 19: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 2377 comments Maybe I am naive, or just missing something, but I don't see the problem with this prompt for library users or anyone unless you literally only have one book to be read in your pissession at any given time. Does that describe any of us?

Plus my library user friends are always talking about the stacks of books they check out or have checked out at a given time.

To me this is simple: look at the books you have borrowed or piled up to read next, check the titles, and then stack them in an order that covers this prompt. If you are a planner, knock this prompt off in January.

My problem is that ANY book can fit this. It just depends on when I decide to check this box, so I don't feel good about it. I can't say "yes, THIS particular book fits this category, and will always fit this category!" So for now, my ideas-spreadsheet is going to have a big empty spot for this category.

I'm sure I'll feel better about this once 2022 starts.

Debbie (debzanne) | 165 comments Nadine wrote: "Theresa wrote: "Maybe I am naive, or just missing something, but I don't see the problem with this prompt for library users or anyone unless you literally only have one book to be read in your piss..."

Do you sometimes read the challenges in order? If you do, even for the first few, you could plan #1-5, for example, and then slot in #20 after that. That way, if it's a book you want to read that connects to the last letter of #5, but you might have to request the book and wait a bit, you'll have the time. Just a thought....

message 22: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 1756 comments Reading in order seems to be a big ask just to make planning one prompt easier! I think people just want to vent.

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 65 comments Theresa wrote: "Maybe I am naive, or just missing something, but I don't see the problem with this prompt for library users or anyone unless you literally only have one book to be read in your pissession at any gi..."

Actually, yes, this does describe me. I didn't specify but I'm not just a library reader, I'm a Kindle and audio library reader. I don't pick my next book until I finish the last one, or am close to finishing. So often the book I want isn't available and I have to place a hold, and then find something else. What I read next is very much based on library availability.

I'm definitely not one of those people who comes out with a stack of books, if I go to the library at all it's because the book I want isn't available in digital and I've placed it on hold.

message 24: by Monica (new)

Monica (booksarelove) | 121 comments I'm sorry that some of you appear to be frustrated with this prompt. Maybe you could list some books that you already have in mind to read that would satisfy other prompts, and we could suggest books that you might like whose title begins with the last letter of the titles of the books that you intend to read.

message 25: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 46 comments I interpreted this to mean that the title of the second book begins with the last letter of the first BOOK, not the first book's TITLE.

message 26: by Monica (new)

Monica (booksarelove) | 121 comments Oh my goodness, Sandra, I see what you mean! That would make things REALLY difficult. But I'm glad to see that I'm not the only person who thought that it had to do with the first book's title. Maybe we could interpret this however we want.

message 27: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Oertel | 764 comments This feels silly but I assume it will work out. Starting in January I'll just check the last letter of each book I read and if it aligns with the next one I'm planning to read I'll write that one down. It's bound to work out eventually, but it will be the only prompt I can't plan. I guess that's fine?

message 28: by Katy (new)

Katy M | 960 comments Sandra wrote: "I interpreted this to mean that the title of the second book begins with the last letter of the first BOOK, not the first book's TITLE."

I had assumed the title and that's the way I'm going to do it. Maybe I should wait until I come across a book that ends with the same last letter of its title to absolutely ensure I do it right?

message 29: by Rachael (new)

Rachael | 136 comments This one is easy for me because I plan my list in advance and read it in order, but I understand that doesn't work for everyone

message 30: by Tanu (new)

Tanu (tanu_reads) | 115 comments Even if you don’t plan, I don’t see why this is so frustrating. Choose a date, go to the fiction section of the library, and pick some books from the library that all start with a particular letter.

message 31: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Mae (patriciaflair) | 126 comments The last book I read is Aristotle and Dante discovers the secret of the universe. So, I think Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell:D

message 32: by Denise (new)

Denise | 374 comments I don't like this prompt either. I tend to add a lot of books to my TBR list that I don't necessarily read for the challenge, so I'll just keep an eye on the last letter of each book that I'm reading throughout the year and see if it can line up with another one in my list.

message 33: by Kat (new)

Kat | 44 comments How do we feel about books that start with an article like "The"? I have so many of those on my TBR list, and surprisingly few titles that end with T... Do we have to count those as T books, or can we go by the first letter of the second word? I feel like books are sometimes alphabetized that way, ignoring articles at the beginning of the title like "the," "a," and "an." But I'm no librarian! (And I'm also a stickler, so I'll probably just find a title that ends in T anyway... 😅)

When you alphabetize books by title, you ignore "the" and "a" and "an" so I'm ignoring them for this category also. For me, the first letter of, say, The Stand is S.

message 35: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 65 comments I would say you could either use it or ignore it, up to you! So for The Stand, either T or S would work. At least that's what I'm doing.

Kenobi and Kahless are both excellent stories.

message 40: by Ron (new)

Ron | 2708 comments I've decided that I'll be basing this off of the last book I read in December/the end of 2021.

So with that, the last book I'll be finishing is Station Eleven which leaves me with the letter 'N'. I'll be choosing The Nineties: A Book .

So many books have 'The' at the beginning so putting it like this- [The] Nineties makes more sense to me. I keep hearing that this is an anticipated book for 2022 and being a millennial I loved growing up in the 90s so it sounds perfect.

message 41: by Roberta (new)

Roberta (greentiger) | 35 comments I found this an easy prompt to fill. I had already chosen some books for a few of the prompts, I listed the last letters of their titles, thought about other books I wanted to read (I always have a list) and then made my choice.
I ended up with "Woman World" for the prompt a about non patriarchal society and I'll follow that with "Die of Shame". It could just as easily have been "The Chicken Sisters" (a book I know nothing about) and "Silkworm", or "The Man in the Brown Suit" (set on a boat, plane, train) and "Treasure Island".
Because the choice of the second book is only limited with by its first letter, it's easy to find something you'd like to read,

message 42: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 13 comments Thoughts on series names vs the actual title of the book? Trying to decide if I should count The Last Wish as starting with a W for "Witcher". I'm just finishing up Iron Widow and I'm borrowing it from a family member, so it would be nice to get it back to them sooner rather than later and I'm not quite sure what other prompts it would fit.
