anxiously awaiting the schedule!!!
Hopefully I can get my hands on a copy by this Sunday, if not it will be some time next weekend.
I am just finishing Dune this month so I look forward to all the discussions as you all read through next month. I will follow along and discuss as you guys progress through.

Dune is an epic science fiction book by Frank Herbert, first published in 1965. He was inspired by a visit to Florence, Oregon at the northern end of Oregon Dunes where the United States Department of Agriculture was trying to stabilize the sand dunes by planting so called ‘poverty grasses’ (vegetation which grow in poor quality soil).
My copy will arrive tomorrow. I apologize for the delayed schedule! Excited to see everyones thoughts :)

I included the first line of the chapter for those like myself who do not have title pages for each chapter.
Unfortunately I've already read this book. I will follow along with the discussion though.

As I remember it, I saw the original David Lynch movie back in the early 80's in the time when we had to rent both the top loading VHS player and VHS tape from the video store..lol. All I can remember is sandworms, so this all seems new to me.

On schedule. Never normally read sci-fi and not seen the films. So like Ian all new and acclimatising to the jargon, but it seems a classic tale of good verses evil and some special anointed one emerging to save the world/s....or maybe not?
Confess to have been a bit of a book ‘worm’ this week, swept along in a storm - sand obviously - of reading and finished Dune already. Not a book that I would have selected to read having always struggled with SF before. But very grateful to have been given the impetus to read what is an amazing novel. Look forward to hearing what others think. Enjoy!

I am enjoying it as well - I am about two-thirds of the way though and think I will be finished by the end of the month. I am finding it hard to put down.
Weren't the mentats all male, and the Bene Gessarits all female??Has anyone else noticed the similarity between the all-female powerful 'mystics', the Bene Gessarits, and the vey similar Ai Sedai of the Wheel of Time (just about to broadcast on Neflix or whatever).
Like the Bene Gessarit, the Ai Seddai don't want any males to have their power (it drives them bonkers!).
I haven't read Dune in decades, and this is a good reason to re-read it - plus I'm keen to see the latest film. There were 'good bits' in the old one, but I never liked the actor playing Paul. Or the weird little sister either.
My favourite bit is told in flashback, where the eccentric ecologist (can't remember the character's name) is captured by the Fremen, bu he impresses them because he shows them how it might be possible to 'green' Dune/Arakis, and so he becomes their hero.Given the dreadful desertification that is ongoing in the Sub-Sahara, perhaps this has a new resonance these days....

Thanks I found by edition had a glossary as well. There is a great chapter which starts with Duncan Idaho getting drunk and is centered around an interaction between Jessica and Thufir Hawat that shows the differences between Mentats and the Bene Gesserit.

I am finished this as well. The ending left me wanting more, but I think I will wait a while before reading the second book in the series.

Can't face the next in the series, just yet. It is one of those rare novels that leaves you elated, but with a void. Hope everyone else enjoys!
This book will take us into December as its over 500 pages.
