Sometimes when she closed her eyes, she could feel the chills of the wind creeping up her back, the sun slowly setting, and hear the chatter and laughter as people walked all around her. Everyone had wide eyes on, as if they were experiencing magic. In a way, this carnival was, the tricks were met with wide eye gazes.
When she felt these flashbacks, she knew who would be beside her, Marianne, laughing at the shows taking place near by. “Come on Lez” she said, eyes wide and mouth gaping open, “We have to go see the main show”.
That was one of the last things she would ever utter.
Ever since then, she wished she hadn’t caved to Marianne’s demands, because now all that was left of her was a shadow of memories past.
“Do you wanna see a magic trick?” a voice had echoed, but everybody was encaptured by the show. Apart from Marianne, she had disappeared without a trace, no words, it was like everybody had been enchanted to be unable to turn their heads, away from the singing and hypnotising calmness of the master’s voice.
Until the show had finished had the final magic trick been revealed, a disappeared audience member. Everyone laughed, thinking it a bonus magic trick.
That was what everyone thought.

The carnival came early. Those were the words that struck fear into Lez’s heart, it had been a year, maybe two since she had last gone. She could have sworn for a brief second that a shadow beside her looked exactly like Marianne’s. How could she be mistaken?
