Fantasy series. Main character falls in love with elf. There are two elves, one is named Silver.

I have a former student who read the first two books in a series and can't remember the name of the book or series to continue it. She said the main character falls in love with an elf. There are two elves. One is named Silver. One elf dies. This is all I know!

Is the main character a male/female? Are the elves male/female? Hardback/paperback? Does she remember what any of the covers looked like? What year might it have been published? Any extra info would be helpful, as there are way too many books with elves as characters.

She read them sometime over the past couple of years. Her mother was the person who asked me if I knew what it might be. Sadly, these are the only details she remembered. It would either be young adult or adult. I know it was a series. I got the feeling it was a female main character that falls in love with a male elf, but I can't say that for certain. :(
