► UNSOLVED: One specific book > Man sentenced to death. In dungeon with 2 other men. Accepts that he will die then gets freed. Feels that it is pointless since he is already dead inside.

Gretchen Agner | 1 comments I was re-reading "The Stanger" last night and could have sworn this was the way it ended. When it wasn't I instantly realized how long it had been since I read Camus and wth is that other book I remember?
I honestly can't remember the crime of which the man in the book was accused. But he was sentenced to death. It seemed to be set around the same time as "The Stranger" but in a more primitive area. If I remember, the close to final scene the man is in a dungeon with 2 other men. Not necessarily chained to a wall, but obviously trapped awaiting his death. during this time he has a somewhat cathartic moment where he accepts his imminent demise. Then, lo and behold, he's pardoned. But it is too late. In his mind he is already dead so his reaction is basically, "What's the point?"
I remember when reading it feeling, "What a jerk! He's free and yet takes no joy it in!"

Thank you for any help.
