Children's book; boy travels to get seasonal jobs. Makes friends with a girl who's family does the same thing. They harvest potatoes together. At the end, the girl gets sucked into the plow that was digging up potatoes(I think by her hair) and dies. Her family offers to pretty much adopt the boy, but he refuses and decides to continue as a loner.
