I read a book sometime between 2013-2018 by an amazing writer. I did a little research on the writer at the time, and I remember that she taught classes on bibliotherapy and using therapeutic writing with teens. I believe she was a survivor of human trafficking, but I may be off-base. The novel alternated between two protagonists. One was a young, black woman (Rose? Ruth?) who escaped her town in the South (Texas?) and had to return years later as an adult. She lives in a cabin in the woods, and is raped by men in the town as an adult. The other protagonist is a man who falls in love with her when they are children together, remains in love with her when she returns home from her time away (in NYC maybe?), and tries to "rescue" her. I think that his mother died when he was young and he was raised by an older sister. For a while, they live together in her cabin in the woods, and he learns about her past. Much of the book is flashbacks from her childhood when she was forced into a cult of some kind. In the present, she often hears the voices of victimized children speaking to her. The book was fiction, but I believe the author said she drew on accounts of real-life survivors of human trafficking.

Looking up the information about the writer that you remembered this article came up: https://www.mcall.com/la-et-jc-pen-em...It mentions the book Ruby by Cynthia Bond. I searched a few keywords in the reviews and it seems like a match!
