A Boy in, perhaps, a Vermont junior high, has increasing distressing dreams of an approaching Evil. His best friend, a Girl of similar age, feels it has important implications and looks for answers. They reluctantly befriend an Older Man who is convinced that a personification of true evil is soon to appear.

That sounds a lot like Prince Ombra by Roderick MacLeish.
And reading a sample of the book on the Amazon site, I think he may be correct.

A Boy in, perhaps, a Vermont junior high, has increasing distressing dreams of an approaching Evil. His best friend, a Girl of similar age, feels it has important implications and looks for answers. They reluctantly befriend an Older Man who is convinced that a personification of true evil is soon to appear.
He tells them that there is little time to prepare, but prepare they must. He, the Older Man, claims to be the reincarnation of the Teacher/Mage/Wizard; the Girl the reincarnation of the Bard/Storyteller/Writer of heroic event; the Boy the reincarnation of the spirt which has always been The Great Hero.
They, all three, called upon each time The Great Evil appears to destroy mankind.
However, this time, The Great Evil, is coming early, before the Hero has grown into adulthood and is ready.
And just as always, the Hero must pay the ultimate price to succeed. A horrible ask of a young boy…
