The Deer Lake Series by H.J. Lewis came up searching Worldcat. The first book is Summer of Change. The series seems to match your description!The last book in the series is literally called Distant Cousin!

Mel (?) may have lived their year round. Her mother wasn't around. Lived with her dad and sisters (?). One of the later books in the series involved her meeting her distant cousin.
