SOLVED. YA Mystery novel about a girl who is dead and trapped in a place she refers to as "Is," and must revisit important parts of her past life in order to figure out how she died, and who killed her. Spoilers ahead. [s]

I read this book about 10 years ago in middle school, so it was Young Adult. I want to say it was published between 2005 and 2013, and I do not remember the title or the author, but I remember that the author was a woman, and it was published in English. I remember the cover was black, with a glowing purple orchid right in the center. Basically, the plot revolves around a teenage girl, stuck in a sort of limbo that she refers to simply as "Is." She re-lives major points in her life in order to determine how she died and who killed her.

(view spoiler)[I specifically remember the ending because of how surprised I was, but it turns out that she was shot by her best friend's mother (the friend is mentioned throughout the story as having a very clingy mother) who was jealous of the girl and didn't want her daughter taken from her. I also vaguely remember something about her using a gold pistol or a revolver? I may be wrong about that part. However, I do remember a part at the end where her friend is writing about "watching her best friend bleed out and die on her doorstep." (hide spoiler)]
