I read this probably twelve - fifteen years ago. It wasn't a very long book; I don't think it had chapters, but it was a full length story. There were pictures ... I think pen and ink, but there might have been color.
I think there were three children, but there might have been four. The main characters were the older brother and sister. They are basically trying to lead their herd of reindeer, along with some other people who are with them, and stay ahead of their evil uncle.
I can't remember what the magical object was; it almost seems like it was some kind of stone or gem, but who knows. I think the uncle tried to steal it (and maybe succeeded at one point).
I don't remember much in the way of plot. I remember a lot of snow, and it seems like the youngest sibling got hurt/had to be rescued/something.

I'd say the book is probably from the 60s or 70s, but really I have no clue. I've googled key words for it quite a few times, and it's really driving me crazy, so any help would be much appreciated!
