Edward George Armstrong - 💀thrown in the sea by someone he trusted, AKA swallowed by a red herring.
Crime -the death of Louisa Mary Clees.
Defense - says she’s probably a victim of one of his operation.,
GUILTY
In reality, he operated on her while he was drunk, thus resulting in his death.

Emily Caroline Brent, 💀 due to bee ‘sting’, injection to the throat actually but the bee was still present.
Crime - the death of Beatrice Taylor.
Defence - no defense. Apparently killed herself while drowning in the water. Probably because she was ashamed ? Yeah, suspicious.
GUILTY
Had a hand in her drowing.

William Henry Blore, 💀 a bear mantelpiece fell on him. ‘Hugged by a bear’
Crime - death of James Stephen Landor
Defense - testified against him and he was found guilty, later died in prison. Blore insist he was really guilty.
GUILTY
admits to falsely testifying.

Vera Elizabeth Claythorne, 💀 hanged herself
Crime - death of Cyril Ogilvie Hamilton.
Defense - she was his governer and in her watch, he accidentally drowned. Insist it was an accident,
GUILTY
deliberately sent him to drown and distracted his mother. Did this, so that his lover can get rid of him and also resented him.

Philip Lombard 💀 shot by Vera in a bright sun.
Crime - the death of twenty-one men, members of an East African tribe.
Defense - took their food and left them to starve. In his defense he did it to save himself.
GUILTY
I don’t need to explain this…

John Gordon Macarthur, 💀 due to an attack in his head while he was sitting alone beside the sea
Crime - death of his wife’s lover, Arthur Richmond.
Defense - denies the affair and says Richmond was one of his officer who he sent on a mission, died naturally.
GUILTY
he did know about the affair and he deliberately sent him to his death. Artmirage is a possible witness.

Anthony James Marston, 💀 due to chocking on a drink
Crime - death of John and Lucy Combes.
Defense - two children he ran over by ‘accident’
GUILTY
Reckless driving, didn’t have a driving permit. Not a normal accident.

Thomas Rogers and Ethel Rogers 💀 died in her sleep and the other died with a chopper on his head.
Crime - the death of Jennifer Brady.
Defense - an old lady in their care who died because they couldn’t get a doctor on time
GUILTY
withheld an important medicine from her and she died due to negligence.

Lawrence John Wargrave, 💀 due to a shot on his head, while he was in a judge set up. From a pistol set up thingy he did himself.
Crime - death of Edward Seton.
Defense - an convict he found guilty. Actually, he influenced the jury to pass him as guilty because of evidence. Or else he would have been acquitted.
NOT GUILTY
Yes, he did manipulated the verdict but the convict was actually guilty…

One of them is ‘mr Owens’ !

I highly suspect it’s Vera because
- we know very little about her
- some symptoms of madness
- very quiet and discreet but shows perfectly normal ‘symptoms’
Almost psychotic.
- very sharp but pretends not to be

And the reveal…

💀 Mr roger due to a chopper on his head

A bumble bee stung one and then there were Five.
💀 due to a bee ‘sting’, injection actually. Bee was still present though

Five little soldier boys going in for law;
One got in Chancery and then there were Four.
💀 John wargrave who died due to a shot on his head while in a ‘judge’ set up ( actually dead by a revolver set up)

Four little soldier boys going out to sea;
A red herring swallowed one and then there were Three.
💀 Armstrong who got betrayed and thrown by the one he trusted. AKA swallowed by a ‘red herring’

Three little soldier boys walking in the Zoo;
A big bear hugged one and then there were Two.
💀 blore who died after a bear mantelpiece fell on him. ‘Hugged by a bear’

Two little soldier boys sitting in the sun;
One got frizzled up and then there was One.
💀 Lambord, shot by Vera in bright sunlight.

One little soldier boy left all alone;
He went and hanged himself and then there were None.

✨ Discussion Time ✨

First thing first, and the most important

The identity of Mr Owens

(view spoiler)[ I was SO sure it was Vera. I mean she just fit in the murderer stereotypes that I became very sure of it. Also, her past was rarely shown properly, we were just shown glimpses of it. So I thought maybe the answer was in the past ?
But nope, she was not.

And the novelist did a very clever thing, she kept the most suspected people at the last ! And ‘killed’ the actual Owens in the middle somewhere.
I was sure if it is not Vera, it’s probably the other two, the ex-inspector or lambord.

I can see what the author did here -

Made an obvious murderer who everyone suspects - mr lambord ( he was merciless (indirectly killed twenty people !), had a gun, was dangerous, didn’t care about anyone, and everybody was wary of him.
But come on, he’s not. It’s too obvious if he is. ( this character is a red herring for every other character but is just here to take the spotlight for us )

Made a discreet murderer who subtly shows murderer traits - come on, the novelist purposely made her the stereotyped villain. Nobody suspects her (literally nobody, everybody else is suspected), she is sharp and strong but purposefully appears weak, KEPT HER AT THE LAST, didn’t show her past properly, showed a lot of scenes which made her appear important.
( this character is the red herring for US, the readers. Since she’s not showing obvious traits, we automatically suspect her)

The actual murderer who is disguised as a side character - has a standard past and motivations, had moderate amount of scene, shows moderate murderer traits….just like any other side character.
BUT If we really really think about it. He’s suspicious from starting…

Has a standard past and motivations ? NOPE. he’s the only one who’s proven to be not guilty from the starting ( punished a convict justly). Also, he’s a judge and as Vera - someone who might take justice too far. So he had motivations different from others.

Moderate amount of scenes ? NOPE. he’s the only character who’s the blind spot. Think about it… we see all the character scenes (including then judges) but if we really map it out…the judge is the only one who’s unclear. (I can explain this more)

Moderate murderer traits - YES ! but it’s different from other characters. Because unlike other chracters, he influence the opinions slightly.

Also the obvious clues, ‘red herring’ which swallows the doctor means someone’s not dead…but everyone thinks it’s the doctor. But look carefully, ‘swallows’ the doctor. Someone who has betrayed the doctor. That can only be one person..

In conclusion, Agatha Christie is a genius. If we had our attention on the judge, we could have actually figured out. But we’re distracted by Vera and lambord !

(view spoiler)[ Omg, yes! I was so distracted thinking it was Vera or Lambord. I suspected Vera since the beginning bc I knew that this murderer wasn't going to be obvious. I understanded nothing about her past and she was too "naive" to be true. So she was my first suspect.

Then was the detective, he was always trying to convince everyone that Lambord or the doctor were the murderer, everyone was guilty except him. He was also the only one who lied about his identity at the beginning of the book.

I would've never guess who the murderer was. Wargrave was always so calm (I thought it was bc he has seen worse cases than this) but now that I realize, it was very suspicious. He was the one who kept everyone calm and said that everyone (including him) could be guilty, but now I know why he was like that. Tbh, it was a very good plan. (hide spoiler)]

The murders

This is the part where I had slight problems.

Here’s the thing, it’s genius
BUT somethings are just convenient ?

First murders were easy…you know out of guard and stuff.
I just loved how the main poem is so cleverly followed.

Murder #1

Ten little soldier boys went out to dine;
One choked his little self and then there were Nine.

- the chocking of drink. This one was obviously easy. He just had to put some poison in glass and viola dead.
Predictable

Murder #2

Nine little soldier boys sat up very late;
One overslept himself and then there were Eight.

Same as above, this one was easy to. Also, it was predictable too. ‘Mrs roger who slept very well’
Yeah, nice try. I’ve read the poem

Murder #3

Eight little soldier boys travelling in Devon;
One said he’d stay there and then there were Seven.

This one was easy too. Because there was only one person who ‘stayed’ AKA sat alone.
But.. this was risky…I mean what If someone had seen him ? And how did he know he was gonna sit alone ? Did he just see an opportunity and striked ?

But it was not that hard if he’s careful, so…I’ll let it pass.

Murder #4

Seven little soldier boys chopping up sticks;
One chopped himself in halves and then there were Six.

Yes, not hard. Because Mr Rogers has to go chop the sticks so..
BUT here’s another problem. Until now, they must have figured out that the poem is being followed right ??
Then why did he go alone chopping wood ?? Dude, didn’t you see the poem ??

Oh well, I’ll just chalk it up to character dumbness and let it pass.

Murder # 5

Six little soldier boys playing with a hive;
A bumble bee stung one and then there were Five.

Ok this murder somehow makes sense BUT what if everybody had not left ms Emily alone ? What if somebody had stayed behind ? What if ms Emily was like ‘don’t leave me alone’

Hmm…a bit convenient but…

Murder #6

Five little soldier boys going in for law;
One got in Chancery and then there were Four.

This one was clever but it’s also very convenient. How was he so sure that the doctor will agree with him ??
Like even if the doctor was gullible, that doesn’t mean that he’ll agree with his plan. The plan is suspicious.

And even if the doctor did go through, what if the other characters have noticed something ? What if they had checked for his death ?
Didn’t they brought him up ? Are you telling me nobody heard anything - heart beat, breathing ?
Come on….

Now, maybe it’s just me…
But I find it hard to believe it was this easy to kill the doctor.
Come on, everyone’s at high alert. So would an old man really be able to kill a much stronger man ??

Like what if the doctor wasn’t so strategically acting according to his plans ?
I find this part a bit convenient.
