David obviously could see her willfulness early on and his instincts were certainly dead on. Riley never respected the “chain of command” and him being former military, I’m sure David recognized the signs. It was reckless for her to supplant her judgment over those with more experience, especially when Max was painstakingly clarifying why what she wanted to do was inappropriate.
No, he wasn’t too hard on her. But, I don’t believe there was anything he could have done to change her behavior.

I was screaming at her, Melissa. Up until then, I was trying desperately to give her the benefit of the doubt.

At one point, though, I actually thought that the author wrote Riley's trip back to the hospital poorly. It seemed so elementary and I wanted Riley to have thought her actions through better than that.
