If you are joining for our Fall selection, "Once There Were Wolves" we are now at Chapters 3-4.
Inti reflected on the first sixteen years of her life with her sister visiting their father in the forest. She imaged the trees as being part of her family. Their father explaining the trees had a "beating heart" you couldn't see and the trees "whisper to each other" through their roots. Her father explained to them that at one time he was a logger and determined which trees would survive and others to be cut down. His life was changed by discovering the majestic beauty of a Douglas Fir tree and let it live and at that time decided to leave that job.
Inti remembered her return to her mother after visiting with her father and questioning their separate lives. Her mother told Inti she needed to be tougher and not worry about trees because she needed to protect herself from a tough world and not feel so much.
Inti arrives to the school meeting with people against the wolves being re-homed on their land. The Wolf Conservation explains the need for the wolves to be there, to help with slowing climate change as an experiment and to help improve the ecosystem. A man named Red McRae comes forward to introduce himself to Inti who declares his desire to hunt the wolves until they are all gone. Inti counters by telling him they are protected and she will see him in jail.
She finds the man who she helped with the horse, who tells her they are going to destroy the horse. Inti decides to go to try and save the horse and he does. Duncan MacTavish helps Inti negotiate a fee to buy the horse from the owners.
Inti goes to the Burns ranch to get the horse she purchased and sees Lainey back home from the hospital after being "injured" and badly beaten. She has a conversation with with Inti and tells her she is glad that she helps save trees. Inti tells Lainey she has a safe place to go to if she needs. Stuart tells Inti Lainey has everything she needs. Inti wonders about that with great reluctance.
Inti reveals her dad leaving a job as a logger, as he has a change of heart after experiencing the beauty of a tree. Inti's mother instilled in her the need to be tough in a cruel world. Can Inti survive a world using the advice and experiences of her parents? Duncan MacTavish? The Burns Family? Stuart? Lainey? what are they hiding? Can Inti help this horse? Can she help the wolves have a safe start against the paranoia of this community?
