SOLVED: Children's/YA > SOLVED. Children's Picture book. Mazes, "search and find" puzzles, and a Dragon. Each maze featured a moment in Ancient History. Dead-end of a maze connected to different parts of the maze, like teleporting. Read around 2003. [s]

Nathan Anderson (nathanandersonart) | 3 comments There's a book I used to borrow from my school library as a kid (so, published in or before 2003). It was a picture book that was a cross between a maze-book and a "search and find" (ala Where's Waldo, etc). The mazes operated on getting to a dead-end, but at the dead-end, there'd be windows to different parts of the maze that were present elsewhere in the same two-page spread illustration. Finding them acted like a 'teleport' to their corresponding parts in the bigger picture.

I recall the book having a slight 'plot' element that involved a red? dragon, perhaps issuing the maze challenge to the reader. I think each maze had their own focus on moments within ancient history (terra cotta army, pompei, maybe?).

This all sounds very specific, but I cannot find it for the life of me. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Nathan, I added some details to the header/ topic title. Feel free to edit it. (Sounds like a book I would have loved as a kid.)

Are they visual mazes you can complete with a pencil - or more like "choose an adventure/ path" stories?

About how many pages in the book?

The Maze and the Magic Dragon by Linda Lowery turned up while searching, but it looks too long.

Search using WorldCat.org:

Keyword: mazes dragon | 1970-2006 | Juvenile | Fiction | Book | English
(Note: Sometimes the website glitches and defaults to a non-English language. Try right-clicking a blank area on the webpage and selecting Translate to English (or similar) from the browser's pop-up menu.)

Great Double Maze Book by Juliet Snape?

"... double mazes that take readers to ancient Rome, the Wild West, a medieval castle, a pirate's cove, and China's Great Wall."

Here are some images of the mazes on eBay.com:

Searched using LibraryThing.com tag mash: history, maze, picture+book

Nathan Anderson (nathanandersonart) | 3 comments hi Kris, these are great leads! I don't think these are the right ones, but definitely on the right track.

page count was probably 20 to 30 pages at the very most-- they were visual mazes, just slightly more 'mechanically' complex than a simple maze.
