Pithy romantic comedy novel set in the early part of the 20th century (early 1900s). There are miscommunications and misunderstandings which eventually end in at least one but maybe two romantic couplings.

I’m looking for a novel set in the early part of the 29th century, and probably written at that time too. It was comedic and pithy, and had one or two main couples that got together in the end. The author is a man and has a long, very English sounding name, maybe with a “the second” or “the third” in his name.

I read the novel in 2014 but I’m pretty sure the novel was written around the same time that the story is set in.
