Can you describe the fantasy world (e.g., medieval, modern Earth - urban fantasy, etc.)?
Are there fantastical creatures like dragons or elves?

I barely remember the plot but I’m going to try.
The guy has powers (maybe magic) that are light magic and a guy ages ago fought in a war to rid the world of the dark monsters (they might not be called that but that’s what I remember them as) and SPOILERS FOR THE BOOK ONWARDS.
The guys friend is really jealous of him and so secretly turns to dark magic and heads off to a small town near a beach ??? To open a portal for the really bad dark guy.
It’s the first book in a series I think.
Parts I’m unsure of if I’m remembering correctly:
He stays with an old lady for a bit that can shape shift that lives on the top of a massive hill/ mountain with some creatures at the bottom (maybe wolves) she may have been fae.
He is in a relationship or likes a girl who is royalty or really important and she goes on the journey with him to defeat the dark magic guy.
The book ended on the portal being opened.
I don’t know if I’m being too vague but I’ve just given myself a headache on trying to remember all of that.
