I have a bunch of cozy mysteries ready to read. I will add the first 2 I am working on once the spreadsheet is off view only. I hope we slay lots of monsters!
Hi team! I was planning to start with Piranesi, which just won the Women's Literary Award and maybe some fantasy or sci-fi awards. Piranesi by Susanna Clarke
Emily confirmed that this satisfies the mythological creature prompt for Sphinx. We can only kill ONE sphinx. So I think this means you can safely ignore all the other prompts under the yellow Sphinx.
I entered it on the spreadsheet Plan. Please let me know if I did it wrong.
I forgot to change the settings on the spreadsheet. You should be able to edit them as a group now. Sorry about that!
Hey all. I believe in order to "kill" the sphinx (or any monster) we have to read all six prompts. Not just a single prompt. So please don't ignore the remaining Sphinx prompts. We want a to take care of that sphinx. @ Nancy, in terms of entering you book; Add the books you plan to read to the planning tab. When you finish the book, add it to the prompt that it covers in the "monster" tabs and the completed tabs (I think...they changed the spreadsheet from the last time we used it.) From what I can tell you did it right.

In the past 2 read-a-thons, my teams have colored their planning strip to help everyone know how close they are to finishing their books. Green-48 hours, Yellow 3-4 day, Red-hopefully by the end of the read-a-thon. Do you all want to do this too?
How do we earn Harpy's? Do all of the pages count or just pages read during the challenge? And is that cumulative, or in addition to other challenges? Like if the book fills Wraith, do the pages also count for Harpy?
I really like when a book is completed we color the title plus what prompt we used it for to make it obvious. I am fine with using color to show how close we are to finishing.
*any pages you read during the read A thon. so if you read a book that doesn't fit a prompt or is shorter than 100 pages you can still count them as pages read.
Hi guys! This is my first read a thon and I am very excited!I read Remote Control by Nnedi Okorafor this morning. Do y'all think the cover is green enough for a book with a green cover?
NancyJ, sorry for the confusion! The rules for the Individual Challenge are different than the Team Challenge. In order to slay a monster, you must complete ALL prompts listed for that monster (so Banshee requires two books, while Ogres require four).
You can kill as many of each monster as you want to gain points, but the Sphinx can only be killed once.

It looks to me to be over 50% green so I think it would count.

Hello friends! I'm checking in in the half hour I have at home, in between a football game and some volunteering. I plan to read tonight though once we're home from all of our running around.I have about an hour left on Billy Summers, which fits several prompts.

Yes, I would like to do this again! It's definitely helpful to have the visual cue.
NancyJ I noticed you put "Piranesi - plan" in the Sphinx tab, you shouldn't put a book in those tabs until it's completed. Please remove that, in case someone else finishes a book for that slot first. The Plan tab should be used until a book is completed, and then it gets slotted into the right monster tab. Make sense?
Hi Nancy, I completed Piranesi now. This is my first readathon, so I'm not sure what's what. Should I leave Piranesi where it is? I'll try to update the spreadsheet now, but please let me know if I need to change something. I saw some color coding, but I didn't see any guidelines re how to show it's completed
NancyJ, if you have finished your book then you can leave it. The actual spots under the creatures don’t get filled in until the book is finished. The first person to finish a book for a prompt gets to pick an open spot. General, if your book fits multiple prompts members put it in the spot with the fewest possible books that will fit. Also, books can be moved around if needed though I have not seen it happen very much. I’m glad you are joining in. I’ve been pulling weeds and listening to my audiobook so far today. I’m taking a break to watch some tennis.
I started Splendid and the Vile, but it looks like several others are also reading 500+ page books, so I think I might choose something else. I have houseguests coming this week, so I'm trying to get as much done this weekend as I can.Does this look predominately orange and red?
It doesn't fit any other categories, so if not, I'll hold off.
Alert - The Suggestions Thread for 2022 has stalled with many suggestions needing seconding. Please take a look to see if you can second one of the new topics.

I plan to finish the book I am currently reading before bed and then I will see what jumps out at me tomorrow. I am not really sure where to focus next and hope some sleep will help.
I might do the same. It's early for me but I'm not very focused at the moment. I have a lot of books on hand (I thought) but I'm not finding many that will work for both the individual and group challenges. I have family coming to stay soon so this is a hectic week already.
That looks predominantly orange to me but we may need a mod to weigh in.NancyJ what I do is add books I plan to read and then mark the prompts they fit. When I'm done, I look to see which of the prompts don't have many options and then just pick one. If you finish a book that only fits one prompt that is already taken, then post here, because the person who read it may be able to move it somewhere else.
I know it seems confusing when you're new but you'll figure it out!
In past challenges, the team I was on would mark a finished column as grey and move it to the end, are people ok with doing that? Right now we have both in progress and completed books that are green and it's a bit confusing.

That way we only have unread books adding to the number of options.
If you want Nancy, I can help with keeping the spreadsheet neat and tidy? I love working with spreadsheets and I don't have much to do this week
Oh right, I forgot about the Completed tab, that's new this time. I think if everyone stays on top of moving their own columns we'll be ok, but of course feel free to clean things up if you see issues.
Rachel did you really finish 3 books today?! I wish I had that kind of time!
Hey all, after reading all day today I finished both The Arabian Nights (I put it under a book where a character dies) and We Could Be Heroes (Book with a character who has a pet). I am planning on starting another book before going to bed, but I will most likely not finish it until tomorrow.
Allie wrote: "how long is "long hair"? Like beyond shoulder-length?"I'd say it should be hitting the shoulders or longer.
I love it that I'm not the only one still up on this team! I'm on the east coast, but my body clock is west coast.I'm about to start They Both Die at the End (in my other group I need to read "made me cry" books this month.) It has a source of light
I did finish three books on Saturday but for two of them I had started them before the event and had 170 pages left in each. The third was under 250 pages. I plan on reading 2 books today.
I'm trying to figure out long hair too, and if this fits:
I just started it so I don't know how long her hair is, it hasn't been described. It looks long to me, but...
I would say anything past the shoulders is definitely long hair. Nancy, I’d count yours. I’m starting to get a migraine so I’m not sure how much reading I will get done today.
What's up with the colors in each monster tab? Yesterday some of them were light green, now those are back to no color and the Wraith tab first column are all blue? I'd like to propose that we leave the colors in the monsters tab white, and in the Plan tab, as prompts are completed, we change the colors there. E.g. we've completed 1 ogre, so now we can start changing the ogre color in the Plan tab to something other than light green, such as light blue.
I assumed that you were changing the colors in the monster tabs. maybe the moderators are doing it to track our monster progress?
I agree that we should change the color on the plan tabs once a prompt is completed to something other than green, which on my phone looks dark green. Feel free to change it how you would like and I will follow the example.
I was not sure if there is an easy way to move a column from the planning tab to completed tab. I finished column w and highlighted the spot bright green but did not move between tabs.
RachelG. You're really kicking butt! The dark green is too dark for me too, even on my laptop. The current light green and light blue on the monster tabs look good to me. How do they look on your phone? Can someone summarize what we're doing with colors in our own columns? What color do you use for a book you'll finish within 24 hours? Does it matter?
There is a red border on one of my squares for Splendid and the Vile (if I did it, it was accidental). Nancy, did you put it there to save it for me? My library ebook expired, but I'll try to get a large print copy tomorrow. If someone else has a 500 page book with no other good options, let me know and I'll hold off on it. (It's for a future bookclub meeting).
ETA - I just got the 500 page book back so I'll finish it now.
It looks like we'll have that Sphinx killed very soon! Yeah Team!
Nancy, green means you think you'll finish it within 48 hours. You don't have to color it but it helps those who are picking books to fit prompts that are needed.
Jillian wrote: "I would say anything past the shoulders is definitely long hair. Nancy, I’d count yours. I’m starting to get a migraine so I’m not sure how much reading I will get done today."
Oh, I feel for you. I get them a lot too. I take ibuprofen at the very first sign of one, and so far this month I've been fine. Can you tolerate audiobooks when you're getting one? Sometimes that's all I can do.
Jillian wrote: "Nancy, green means you think you'll finish it within 48 hours. This week, you will read books that will help you slay these monsters. There are a wide variety of monsters, each with different weaknesses, so make sure you are slaying the most you can to accrue points and win favor from the queen!
How It Works:
Read books to fulfill the prompts and slay monsters. When each monster is slayed, you will earn that monster's badge and points. You can attack multiple monsters at a time, and you can slay multiples of the same monster (except for the elusive sphinx!). You can also log your pages to attack those pesky harpies. Your battle strategy is up to you!

Spreadsheet:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
Each tab will help you track the monsters you slay. Use the tabs to fill in books, pages read, and audio hours listened that you have already completed. Use the planning tab to track books-in-progress and hopeful books. Your queen (me!) will be watching those spreadsheets to see when you've successfully vanquished the monsters.
