Hark! It's time to save the princess from the vast variety of monsters that are keeping her trapped in the castle.

This week, you will read books that will help you slay these monsters. There are a wide variety of monsters, each with different weaknesses, so make sure you are slaying the most you can to accrue points and win favor from the queen!

How It Works:
Read books to fulfill the prompts and slay monsters. When each monster is slayed, you will earn that monster's badge and points. You can attack multiple monsters at a time, and you can slay multiples of the same monster (except for the elusive sphinx!). You can also log your pages to attack those pesky harpies. Your battle strategy is up to you!

For more information and to ask questions, see our Introduction and FAQs thread.

Spreadsheet:

Each tab will help you track the monsters you slay. Use the tabs to fill in books, pages read, and audio hours listened that you have already completed. Use the planning tab to track books-in-progress and hopeful books. Your queen (me!) will be watching those spreadsheets to see when you've successfully vanquished the monsters.

Brittany Morrison | 478 comments Hi everyone, I'm working night shift tonight so I probably won't get a start to reading until later in the afternoon tomorrow. I'm planning on reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone which could work for sphinx (main character who has a pet) or banshee (featuring the death of a character) and The Savage and the Swan which will work for dragon (animal print on the cover). If I get through those I might be able to work on another small something, but those two are all I can commit to right now.

message 5: by L Y N N (new)

L Y N N (book_music_lvr) I've pulled about 60 shorter books to consider for this challenge so will have to go through those to see what might fit. I have some longer books I've already started reading but none with 500+ pages! I'm anxious to see what everyone else is going to read, too! Thank you for serving as captain, Kim!

Jen K | 572 comments Hey all, excited to read with you!

Before I knew that the read-a-thon was happening this week, I had been planning to read The Heart's Invisible Furies so I might continue with the plan if no one else has a 500+ page book and find some fun short audios to match other prompts while I walk and do chores. First up I have The Soul of a Woman which would work for the Dragon orange cover.

I forgot to change the settings on the spreadsheet. You should be able to edit them as a group now. Sorry about that!

message 8: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 130 comments Hello All,
I'm excited to start reading for the read-a-thon soon. I saw in the rules for the individual challenge you can continue books in progress as long as you have 100+ pages left to read. I'm currently reading Heir of Fire - I'm only 100 pages in, so ~460 pages left. Can I use that for the group challenge? It has a green cover, so would work for that prompt. Or can I only use it for Harpy points? Or not at all? If it can't count for the challenge I have many, many more library books to choose from that I haven't started! Thank you.

Yes! As long as you have at least 100 pages left, you can count it as a book completed for one of the prompts. Completing the green cover would be great!

For the Harpy points, you would just mark the pages read during the challenge rather than the full 460 pages.

A book can count for both the group and individual challenges, and it can count for pages read each day as well as a prompt when finished! Hope that clarifies things!

message 11: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 130 comments thank you both! I think I understand now. :)

message 12: by L Y N N (new)

L Y N N (book_music_lvr) I've been wanting to read A Gathering of Shadows and it is just over 500 pages in length! Perfect for the 500+ prompt for OGRE! I can use Of Mice and Men for a book with alliteration in the title prompt for SPHINX. And Love Story for the book with a green cover prompt for the OGRE. These are three that I will plan to finish this weekend.

message 13: by L Y N N (new)

L Y N N (book_music_lvr) I just started reading Elsewhere, Home last night and they are traveling to Cairo, Egypt for a visit! That will fulfill the "A book (at least partially) set in Egypt prompt for the Sphinx! Okay, back to reading!

message 14: by L Y N N (new)

L Y N N (book_music_lvr) Not sure how you want the spreadsheet completed, Kim, but I went ahead and listed the four books I mentioned above on it with my name beside each. I'll check in later today...

I'm thrilled that you have a book with animal print on the cover to read for this. I saw that prompt and couldn't think of a single book! :)

Thanks, Lynn. I feel like I'm playing catch up here. I appreciate the help.

L Y N N (book_music_lvr) Ack! Wait before you thank me! LOL I had totally overlooked the PLANNING spreadsheet! Anyway, I have entered 7 books on it which I am certain I can finish during the readathon. However, those that are listed as "TBR" could be switched out if we need to cover a different prompt. BTW, I have never seen anyone use "TBR" and "In Progress" on the planning spreadsheet before! Excellent!! I have a busy day, so won't check-in again until this evening but am so excited for these books and reading with you-all! 😊

The spreadsheet is set up very differently than for previous readathons. It's going to take a little getting used to.

Ailsa Leitch | 13 comments Hi Everyone! I’m excited to get this read-a-thon started. I am currently reading Pachinko and Maybe You Should Talk to Someone. I’ll update the planning spreadsheet with my reads.

Jen K | 572 comments Hey all, I finished Of Women and Salt. It was short and I had started it already but had over 100 pages left. I used it for Dragon 5 but it can be moved if needed.

Hopefully I got the spreadsheet right.

Jen K | 572 comments After a nice walk and some chores done, I finished The Soul of a Woman by Isabel Allende and will use for Dragon 3. Isabel Allende is my hero.

The cover is half fur and half feathers so although its not a traditional animal print in my head, like cheetah, I figured it still worked!

message 23: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Morrison | 478 comments Also I failed to think about the fact that I always have an audiobook going while I'm doing chores and such. I should finish Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg this week as well. I'll see where I might be able to fit it in, if nothing else it will be some audio hours.

message 24: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3282 comments For some reason I was convinced the readathon was next week, so I have a couple of longer things lined up. I'm currently reading Blood & Honey, and I'll be reading the third book in the series next. Luckily, they read fairly quickly for books of that size, and I also have a bit of time off mid-week so I can hopefully squeeze in a few more things too.

Lisa | 130 comments Saturday's Progress:
142 pages of Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas
60 pages of The Gathering Storm by Robert Jordan/Brandon Sanderson
45 minutes of Born A Crime by Trevor Noah

I hoped to get a little further in The Gathering Storm, but hopefully I'll make up for it tomorrow.

I loved the audiobook for Born A Crime. I swear the way Trevor Noah says Volkswagen is therapeutic lol

message 30: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 130 comments LOL - that is too funny! I have been trying to say it the way he says it every time I hear it. I think maybe he is just making the w into an h sound, but it also sounds more complicated than that.

message 31: by L Y N N (new)

L Y N N (book_music_lvr) Finished a reread of Love Story 50 years later and am amazed at how well it holds up. It definitely was a book for the times when young folk were all about rebellion against the "machine" of 'acceptable society'!
85 pages into Elsewhere, Home which is a short story collection, mainly for the Reading Women challenge prompt #27, but also one of the best story collections I've read so far!
100 pages into A Gathering of Shadows and enjoying it as much as I did the first installment in the series!
Not as many pages read as I would have preferred for today, but hopefully, many more to come tomorrow!

message 32: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3282 comments I didn't end up reading anywhere near as much as I expected today, but I got a pretty good start on Blood & Honey. 155 pages in so far. I might be able to finish it tomorrow, but that would mean reading about 400 pages so I'm not sure how realistic that is.

HAPPY READING!!

No problem. I find a cozy mystery is 10 times more entertaining if a witch is involved. Easy for me to knock out and a good balance for my heavier read.

message 49: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 572 comments It's impressive the amount of reading I can manage when procrastinating. Sigh. Paranormal book done though. Any suggestions for the next task to try?

message 50: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 130 comments Monday's Progress:
78 pages of Heir of Fire
30 minutes of Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood
0 pages of The Gathering Storm

Based on my schedule, today will likely be my worst day of the read-a-thon; I should be able to do more reading for the next six days. I anticipate finishing Heir of Fire tomorrow - I'm thinking the best place to put that book is for Fiery Character to work towards slaying our first dragon.
