It's about a small boy whose father has just died (I think he was a captain in the army in England) and his mother goes into shock. The boy is very beautiful, and soon after, it comes to light that he is the heir (or something) to an earldom/dukedom.
So he goes to live with his old grandfather, who had originally disowned his son because he had married the boy's mother against his wishes.
I remember that the grandfather had gout, so the little boy used to help him walk sometimes. The boy and the reluctant grandfather grow fond of each other, though I don't remember what happens at the end, but the boy's grandfather and his mother are reconciled at the end.
