I just finished the book and can't improve on the review Lauren left above. Enjoyable and look forward to reading the next in the series. I

Lauren, we eat codfish at 24th dinner, not in all of Portugal, some places eat octopus. At 25th we eat baked turkey and in same places a kind of lamb. I don't mind very much because I'm not a fried cakes kind of person.

That was an easy and fun read. The banter was witty - which I always enjoy; and there were interesting side characters. However it was a bit too slap stick and predictable for me to rate it too highly, and I suspect it will be quickly forgotten.

I think the author shows promise and I would consider reading the next in the series - hopefully the next novel will have a bit more depth. She has introduced a few interesting side characters for future novel development.

I did liked the book, but I didn't like very much the modern sex talk of the couple, but in a way I understand the way the things went and how far and fast they went, they were talking about what each one would like and like to do to the other, so I suppose it was natural to happen that way. On the contrary I don't understand very well how the same happens in other books with not having this kind of talk between the couple.

Read it some week ago, and found it to be quite entertaining and fun. But I already had to read some of your comments to remember the plot... I think I'm mixing it ut with a Meredith Duran book about a father that has an obsession with Egypt :)

I'm sorry to say I have given up at 53% and dnf'ed. The sex scene was completely unconvincing to me. A sweet, gently-raised, innocent young lady just would not have behaved that way on her first experience, and also the sex talk was too modern. Just nope, nope, nope.

The book just wasn't working for me and I decided to stop wasting my time, and try another one of the BOTMs instead. It's good some of you are clearly enjoying/have enjoyed the book, but we all have different tastes, and this book just isn't for me.

I will go back to it later cause I love me some witty banter. That's one of my favorite things but I just couldn't get into the mystery of the Stolen artifacts.

My problem is that I prefer audiobooks to ebooks so I'm making slow progress reading this ebook. Another problem is that it's not really catching my interest but now that I'm in chapter 11 and they'd agreed to work together, I'm hoping for more scenes with them and things will start getting interesting.

Agree, the second half lost me. As Jan said, there were a lot of things that were a bit of a stretch and Henry, I just wanted to knock some sense into him. (view spoiler)[ His stubborn insistence on withholding the truth from her even at the risk of losing her trust and love made no sense. Can the truth be any worse than that? It was also insulting that he did not have much faith in her to look beyond his debts. He still had a title and she a dowry. And the raunchy out of place sex-scenes and language! (hide spoiler)] Overall, I think this author has great potential but maybe a 3/5 for this book? On a positive note, how great was Fanny's character?!

@Jultri I think your spoiler is very valid. I enjoyed the authors writing. I just think she needs to pick an era. Historical or fantasy or modern. BUT the trend for mixing all of the above though is here. Netflix Bridgertons has done so.

True. Netflix's Bridgertons worked because it was a visual treat and hey, we all want to see more of Regé-Jean Page, so the sex scenes were not at all gratuitous! :) I think when it comes to books, those of us who have read HRs for many years are a bit more particular and protective of the 'authenticity' of the genre.

I do agree having the visuals make a big difference. I prefer old school HR.

This was such a fun book. Rom-com and Regency, my favorite combination. I was frustrated by Henry's refusal to tell the truth at times, but he did redeem himself, his father was a complete total jerk, but was dealt with kindly but appropriately (for his era) in the end. Like many others have mentioned, I really liked Fanny the maid, and Billy the tiger was funny.
The next installment centers upon Anne, Caro's sister but I hope there will be a story involving Lord Graverley in the future.

So back in chapter 6, when Caroline had male callers. (view spoiler)[That scene reminded me of the scene in the Bridgerton Netflix series when Marina received callers and that one guy reciting a poem for her. It was kind of nice to read about since not too many HR books have scenes where the heroine receives male callers.

Back to the book, at one point, Fanny stomped on Graverley's foot because his gaze remained on Caroline's decolletage a bit too long. At first, I thought maybe there was some history between the two of them (Fanny and Graverley). That maybe she knew Graverley intimately through a secret identity like during a masquerade or something, but he didn't know her identity. That maybe she stomped on his feet because she was a little jealous that Graverley was giving his attention to Caroline (and her decolletage), but now I think she was just trying to protect Caroline, especially after reading chapter 8, when Fanny hit Henry with her parasol when she learned the extent of how he humiliated her. (hide spoiler)] I hope Graverley gets his own book, too.

Just like the other BOTM for October, (The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting), I forced myself to finish this book because she's a new-to-me author. I couldn't connect with the characters. Their behaviors and language were too modern for me. Any other time, I probably would have DNF'd the book. The sneak peek at Anne's book has me intrigued, so I will be reading her book when it's released.
